Seems like an awful lot of people are conflating "play what you want" with "play how you want", the two things may be related, but there's a world of difference between them: There is only a handful of correct ways to play a job, but there's no correct job to play, that's a personal choice, not an objective one.

While ignoring combos and skill synergy -is- playing wrong, choosing MCH over BRD is not.

Please, do take that into consideration.

Based on the job and what it's capable of alone, perhaps. But arbitrarily choosing is a bad idea. You could be passing up a good MCH for a bad BRD or a good player overall for a bad one.

It's important to be clear on that.

It's exactly what everyone is saying here, the only kind of people that would make these kinds of questions would be people new to the game and for those people there's no reasonable way to know what they'll be good at or if they'll be good, so the best is to point them towards a job they have fun playing with, cause that will make it more likely that the person will be engaged enough to care about playing the job properly.

Most of the people that I answered that to would usually follow up with questions such as "what job does X?" which would normally open a conversation about the details of each job, those are the people that will be interested in the game, not the people that just want to know "the strongest job".

The only worthwhile class advice to give to a new player, besides "Play what you want!" is that they might want to consider a tank or healer for easier queue times. The decision of what to level first is meaningless to endgame content. If someone asks for advice on what they should play, saying something like, "DRG is trash right now, don't play that." is pointless. Any job is perfectly acceptable to do all story content through 70.

After they've completed the insane amount of content on the road to 70, if they decide that they want to do end game content and their chosen job isn't the best fit, they can level up something else. Telling people to suffer through a job they don't like for dozens of hours on the chance that they'll want to comply with the end game meta is asinine.

You guys should stop claiming savage / end-game content cannot be cleared without everyone playing the meta. This claim is ridiculous, wrong, absurd and appalling.

A full meta party can make things ‘easier’, but that does not make your party have better players in any way, shape or form. On the contrary.

Imagine two parties; a non meta and a meta party, clearing end-game content; so what if the boss goes down 10 seconds later with the non meta party than with the meta-party? If you call this casual playing then you have serious issues. Even more so if these non meta players actually play the class they love most.

Stop this elitist troll, you have no clue about being a good player and it is hurting the game and community.

Let the top 1% world-first play full meta parties in peace, stop trolling all other (good) players!

"One day Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Cheshire cat in a tree.
'Which road do I take?' she asked.
'Where do you want to go?' was his response.
    'I don't know', Alice answered.
'Then', said the cat, 'it doesn't matter.'"
