I've only ever dabbled in gathering and I don't bother with crafting. I earn my gil over time through various sources that require a decent amount of investment, luck and effort.

With gathering and crafting being tied to actual jobs in this game then it's only fair to not screw over gatherers and crafters. If they're unable to make a profit then they just won't bother. There are a lot of negative consequences that will arise out of merging server markets. Especially on Aether where two of the biggest servers - Balmung and Gilgamesh - exist in tandem.
