There's a SE game out there that does this exact thing. The treasure chests on the map get destroyed by the monsters if you're not quick enough. You can still traverse the map without them, you just don't get any little bonus items. When the time limit ends, I wouldn't mind a little cutscene depicting what happened to the treasure or whatever and still being allowed to continue.
