    A Question about Teleport

    Hello everyone!

A few people I have been playing with had a lengthy Discussion about Teleportation from an in-universe perspective when we ran into what one might call a problem: Differences in various languages. More specifically the Fisher lvl 68 Quest in the german version states that Wawalago teleports while the english Text says they 'set sail' to Kugane. As not even the Warrior of Light and his companions make their way back to Eorzea via teleport (they board a ship even though they should be attuned to eorzean Aetherytes) we asked ourselves: Which one is correct? Is it possible to teleport over such great Distances?

As several sources cite aetherial travelling as very taxing on the caster (varying from person to person) and older sources mention aetherial travel getting more taxing the greater the Distance(though it is not brought up in 2.x+ I think): Do we have any definitive Answers? How do others handle this?

    For reference:
    Wawalago
In Kugane bin ich in jungen Jahren einmal gewesen. Ich werde sofort meine Siebensachen packen und mich dann dorthin teleportieren. Allerdings werden die Vorbereitungen etwas Zeit in Anspruch nehmen.

    which roughly translates to:
"I have been to Kugane when I was younger. I will pack up my things and will then teleport there. The Preparations will take some time though"

    and the eng:
    Wawalago
And with that, , I do say it's time to set sail for Kugane. You'll be heartened to hear that I spent a spell in the Far East in my younger years. I'll be on my way in short order. In the meantime, might I ask you a minor favor?

The "setting sail for" is just a mor maritime way to say "going to". It doesn't explicitly mean he will use a ship or boat to go there.

    To the teleporting itself:
aetherial travels may really harmful for the traveler (Y'shtola, Thancred), but i thought the aethernet would be a way to lessen the stress for the traveller with specific routes.
So i think in lore it isn't usually possible to just teleport to an aetherite you want.
Imo you have to use them like the aethernet in the big cities, use an aetherite as entrance and another as exit.

Tataru talks about it briefly in early HW. She says that it's incredibly draining for most people to teleport, and that the WoL is an anomaly. The German dialogue is probably a mistranslation.

Think it's just some freedom the localisation teams take.
On the topic of teleportation, I believe in one of the earlier quests of ARR it is mentioned that, while most people would generally be able to use the Aetheryte systems, it puts a strain on the caster's body, so most people settle for more conventional travel methods, especially on far travels.

Topic of teleportation is discussed in passing by Alphinaud during Stormblood MSQ (after aetheryte in House of the Fierce got repaired if I remember right), that teleportation requires anima. Unlike most people, WoL is said to have unlimited amount of it, making it possible for continous teleportation without any side effect. Anima was some sort of currency back in 1.0 days used to teleport, the amount of which was, as I understand it, limited. Hopefully some legacy players can correct me on this.

Anima was limited and regenerated on a timer at set intervals (which got changed a few times). Return didn't take anima iirc. Favoriting a spot lowered its anima cost. Teleports were also shared so that was one way to keep down anima consumption.

Kind of pulling bits and pieces of previous posts and dodo-taping them together with the missing bits, but:

Anima seems to be a subtype of aether that is unique to spiritual energy. It is the force poured into a soulstone to create a quasi-soul (such as a golem). It's also implied to be the same aetherial energy you siphon from yourself and turn into an avatar (arcanima).

The anima cost of a teleport did vary, by less by ostensible distance and more by the type of teleport. Teleporting from an aetheryte to an aetherial gate (no longer a thing) was 1. Return was originally 2 but this was later removed. Teleporting within a region was 4, but inter-region was 6. Yet it didn't matter how near or far that region was. Teleporting to a city was 3, and therefore you could teleport from Ul'dah to Gridania for cheaper than from Eastern La Noscea to Western Thanalan.

Thus we can infer that the anima is spent on the act of breaking down and reassembling your body more than anything else. The distance between beacons probably does drain a bit of it as well, but an insignificant amount compared to [de|re]materialization.
