As for battles being slower...think the fact we can chain 2-3 WS off of 1k TP thanks to combos makes it seem a bit more lively. Added to the fact combos need certain criteria fullfilled in order to be executed makes me feel like I'm taking a much more active role during combat.
Stop using drugs man. The battle from xiii is the best of the series so far. That's why they are repeating it with xiii-2 with new stuff.

Each battle to each time. I love ff iv battle, and so on, but it wouldn't work in a ps3 game. The ff12 battle was horrendous. That's why is banned from ever showing uP again

i agree this patch is terrible for rank 10-20 players.
    yea , it's ..... really terrible actually.
at low rank game , this game used to be terrible , but now , it's awful.
"Combo" that can hits 2 hits at highest that takes 30 seconds to recast..
oh man...we are guaranteed we wont have new players until 2.0..

and job system? it's a story after rank 30.. i don't think (new) players has such a patient..
i think i understood SE's overview in this patch..
more fun for veterans , more real pain for new players..
i just say .. poor young players..

    From Producers Letter 21 (XXI):

As you can see, we’ve added a lot of new tasks under items, synthesis, and gathering. Major reforms are in the pipes for HQ synthesis and gathering items, to take place in patches 1.20 and 1.21. To ensure that these changes come to you in a refined state, we will focus mainly on groundwork in 1.20.

At the same time, work is underway to revise the effects of accessories, food, and medicines, as well as to overhaul recipes. However, we need to ensure that all these changes are in agreement with the class reforms currently in progress. And so the team will concentrate on balance tweaks in 1.20, with an eye for full implementation by 1.21. The last thing we want is to mess up balance, and we ask for your patience and understanding.
They made us weaker in 1.20 so that Accessories, Food and Medicines will be (more) effective in 1.21 yet not overpowered.

I don't know why so many people keep thinking the latest patch (starting with 1.18) is the "Golden Patch" that fixes everything when in reality each patch is still just building the framework.

1.18 thru 1.22 has always been the plan to overhaul the game with 1.23 and beyond focusing more on content (and tweaks).

But in the words of the Bard Thomas Petty, "...the waiting is the hardest part...".

Dunno, I'm doing a lot less with the current battles. I find myself having more downtime because there are no "free" attacks to strategically gain TP. You equip invigorate and on occasion you can fire off your skills like it was 1.19, but since you can't equip Pikemanship to reduce the cooldown of Invigorate, there's still this giant "gap" in between fights while you wait for all your cooldowns to finish. Battles now are "wait to hit 1000 TP, fire this canned combo", "wait to hit another 1500 TP, fire this other canned combo", "continue doing canned combos until the 'bigger' canned combo finishes cooling down", rinse and repeat.

In 1.19 I felt like I had more variety and options in what I could do - I was always at zero TP because there was always something for me to use at any given time. Doesn't feel like that anymore, now that battles are back to this slower pace.

I hope the "second half" of the battle reforms in 1.21 addresses this.

    I wish I had the OP's optimism.

The current server/engine structure can not support fast paced, responsive battles. Everything feels slow because everything is FUNDAMENTALLY slow. The current engine nor servers are even made for this sort of combat.

You can cry all you want about it but the core is just not in place to do anything fun with the new systems. The new structure is coming as fast as possible, until then deal with it or wait by the sidelines.

    Oh man, so strategic!

Every single battle needs to test your skill as a player. An auto-attack system and static SP don't provide that feeling of satisfaction.
    NO!
I dont even have to explain this.

Yeah, a faster paced battle system like XIII-2 would be fantastic. Or just... faster paced. I was hoping the combos would be more fluid as well, but it just seems very slow. A lot of people are right when they say it appears sluggish. They CAN make auto-attack work at a much more enjoyable level. Malakhim is also right when the enemies should require true strategy to beat.

What Betel said. I'm hoping they add back a couple instants for each class, at least the melees.

Ironically, I made a very long post about this in a similar thread about my husband's impressions of the new combat system. I'll quote the most relevant parts:

My husband hasn't been very happy with the game, but one of the only things he thought was fun was combat, especially on his PGL. Now that's no longer fun, either.

Combat for melee is slow to start, and boring. And jobs won't change that, considering you don't unlock them until level 30. You can't expect people to wait for 30 levels to start enjoying their class. I don't think it'll make a difference, anyway.

Yoshi-P said this was the patch we were to try out and make our decision whether or not to pay a subscription. Well, it's definitely made me decide not to pay.
This makes me a little sad, never got to play with you but I enjoy reading your posts about your and your husband's impressions of the game.
    Gonna miss that.
