It broke my heart when they took these two (origin) main characters away ..

The title says it all.. when i first jumped into FFXIV 1.0. back then (pre A Realm Reborn) the first two characters with whom my characters had the first contact with...

Cant believe that SE took their lifes so easy away. I mean YDA's death was for more or less a huge SIDE note (Oh sorry guys im not YDA, im Lyse - her sister, she died some years agao)... sorry that wasn't something Yda deserved.. to get cut out of the game like a small sidekick note.

But well maybe the original Yda and Papalymo died already in the launch of "A Realm Reborn"... when they received different voiceover etc. too (which i liked more back then).What i dont understand why do all characters have to die that SE doesnt want to be part of the party anymore? They could leave the parties for other reasons than death... and make a comeback in other expansions or not. But death is so finate. And with Yda it felt way too constructed (and unnecessary) i dont understand for what we needed Lyse?

spoiler alert for those who didn't finished 4.0 story:

and wasn't the 1.0 Yda already actually Lyse? also Lyse left the party at the end of 4.0, without dying. Gosetsu didn't died either, just our character / the scions think he's dead.

Papalymo's death as a tragedy is at least acknowledged, because all he did was buy us time to stop something that shouldn't have happened.

On the other hand, all that happened to Yda was that the Yda you knew was actually Lyse all along, that's why she had a carefree nature that seemed to clash with the other Scions.

I have a sneaking suspicion that Papalymo will turn up again at some point and is not actually gone... to have two characters basically go out Louisoix style like that just doesn't seem appropriate and maybe we'll find out that Omega or Garlemald has him captive or something.

Thank you for posting the link! I had never seen the 1.0 intros and I've got to say Yda, I mean Lysa, and Papalymo had me laughing all during their cut scenes. It makes me wish we had seen more of that in ARR and beyond.

I also agree with you. Yda's death is such a throwaway that I have to wonder what the writers were thinking. It's all handled way too cavalierly, and worst of all, it is unnecessary. Yda could have gone on after her friend's death and we need not ever had "Lyse" introduced.

As far as Papalymo, I'm on the fence. On one hand, he never seemed to do much in the story, so death is a good way of writing out a character whom never caught fire with the writing staff. On the other hand, I have to ask why he couldn't have been included in the continuing story. I just don't get it.

We have never met Yda. The 'Yda' you encountered in the very first cutscene for Gridania back in 1.0 was Lyse all along. Yda died years before the WoL enters the story. The nature of 'Yda's' mask has been a very conspicuous mystery ever since 1.0 so I actually think the Yda/Lyse switch was planned all along since the very beginning.

In Papalymo's case I actually think his death was needed. Some kind of tragedy was necessary for Ilberd's actions to really hit home and Papalymo's death was the catalyst for Lyse to finally get serious. She became a much more sombre character after her friend died. That sort of shift in character means that Papalymo's death wasn't meaningless at all from a writing perspective. There's also the issue that he served solely as a foil to 'Yda's' carefree nature so her reveal as Lyse sort of rendered him obsolete. It was better to let him go out in a blaze of glory than have the writers make up a new arbitrary reason for him to be relevant to the story.

90% of ff14 1.0 was echo CS. as of the last quest of Hw+ start of storm blood yda has been dead 6 years. the calamity happen 5 years befor ARR and for all we knoe from ARR-ebd of HW was a year. most 1.0 echo cs happen over the course of 15 years. In ul'dah you see minfilia as a bratty child.
