Actually you should be standing in melee range unless you have a reason not to because extra auto attack damage. But melding STR to increase that is just stupid.

Not to mention standing in close range allows you to be a more useful target for Dragoons and that Dragon Eye buff. You can also reserve your mobility skills for dodging boss aoes, allowing you to use the GCD that would otherwise be spent locked in a movement animation to cast more spells.
