The Raid community as we know it

I generally listen to the State of the Realm podcast every Wednesday at work to pass the time a little faster and generally it has done very well in doing so. This week's episode, however, had me almost actually FEELING my blood pressure going up. Why you ask? The guest--if any of you listened, I don't need to name names. If that guy represents the mentality of the raiding community, I am full glad that I have no part of it. People like him makes the League of Legends community look like Woodstock.

When raiders allow people with his kind of attitude, why do they wonder why more people don't raid?

with this little amount of context into what you are talking I find it hard to know whats your point? toxic people being toxic? 1 person doesn't represent an entire community it's 2017 we should know this by now, still I don't understand what this has to do with the raiding community, there's nice people and toxic people on every side of every coin casual, hardcore, raiding or not. whatever this person did to trigger you should not blame a entire community because of him, that will make you no better than the person you are mad about.

He's talking Xeno and his "bully" stream. I won't sugarcoat it and say his stream isn't aggressive. They absolutely are. But if that style of criticism bothers anyone, they aren't obligated to watch his stream. Xeno doesn't represent the raid community anymore than MrHappy does. He simply provides a different style some people prefer. You'll either appreciate the brutal honesty or hate him for it. I'll say one thing though, he's more than willing to help players who don't make excuses even if he can be an ass sometimes. If you prefer more relaxed raiders, look up Avenger_Kusari or Mizzteq. I haven't followed Nariko Star much, but she's a hardcore raider and seems pretty chill. The raid community is diverse. Xeno doesn't have a majority opinion.

You being in the generalization sense. Just to be clear.

    Extremely well said.

Seen plenty of casual a-holes and nice hardcores in my time as well.

I didn't much care for the guest either, but at the same time you've been here for four years. You know very well that one person does not represent the whole. Perhaps his FC or raid group, but certainly not the community.

Raiders don't "allow" anyone. The "raiding community" isn't a club with exclusive membership. The most anyone can do is refuse to play with such people (and I'm just taking you at your word that there's something wrong with this person, as I have no interest in MrHappy's podcasts), yet those people once refused can then just band together and raid, thus becoming raiders and part of the raiding community.

It's been the same in every game I've played. You get random people who have a bad run in with someone who raids and suddenly they're on the forums preaching the evils of the raiding community or whatever other in-game community it may be. I'd strongly encourage you to learn the lesson that individuals represent individuals, not any group you may be inclined to link them to.

People are going to jump to conclusions based on the most toxic representative of their group. Look no further than the US political mess. Look no further than how people have different words for "terrorist" depending if they are foreign or domestic, white or brown.

Listening to anyone who claims to be a part of a group without there being an official representative of that group is going to make that group look bad, and it's up to the people within that group to respond to the toxic terror created by non-representatives to keep a handle on the message they want to promote otherwise the greater community is going assume that community is alright with that position.

Within FFXIV's own forums we have people who yell and scream if you're not following "the meta" for raids, and then within the game we get the same people within the mentor system who trashtalk newbies for not being perfect. Nothing creates a more toxic atmosphere than silent approval. If MrHappy did a live podcast and wasn't aware that someone was going to be hostile, that is one thing, but if he recorded it in advance and aired it anyway that is going to reflect poorly on him.

Whenever you see someone say "you need a thicker skin", that means they hurl abuse and enjoy it. Opt out instead of complaining about it.

What kind of stuff they say that bothered you?
I went and listened to a bit of the latest State of the Realm (the xeno interview), but didn't have time to sit through the whole podcast. Just curious to understand.

OP making a mountain out of a molehill. I listed to the same podcast, there was nothing wrong with the guest. He is part of a hardcore raiding guild and he talked about his experiences in it. Everyone in his groups were playing with the same goals and pretty much all hardcore raiders are the same way. There is nothing wrong with that, it is a niche community that plays by different rules. There is nothing forcing you to interact with that community and they do not effect you in any way.
