    As a native speaker, I can assure you that the latter pronunciation is one that is widely used, albeit spoken faster so it doesn't emphasize on the first syllable that much. Also, if people here happen to see something large with leathery wings at night, they will most likely associate it with aswang, specifically a wakwak.
