They could always use the time dialation system from Eve Online and that would allow for thousands of players in a zone. The more people in the zone, the slower time gets. With 10,000 in a zone, your looking at 10 minutes per gcd action.
Don't like that idea? Well, we are limited by both the server hardware and network systems. They bought all new servers for this expansion but they can only handle so much. The demand far exceeds the resources of the servers based upon how they designed the Ixion encounter. Even if they made the fight like Odin, the zone can handle only so many people. I am sure they are looking at the encounter and are working on a way to change it to mitigate the issues. Till then, we have to accept the fact that there will be major issues with Ixion. I'm going to do my part and farm Ixion in the months to come, I have to prepare for Savage Omega, a pony can wait.

People are grouping so many different issues into one and blaming the servers.
I'm glad there's at least some who do understand.
For one, storage (housing, invo, etc) may have to do with server space, we don't even know if the servers lack that or if they are just saying that because of costs. Yes, it is expensive, and promising more of these to the players would mean they have to make it available for EVERYONE, not just you and me. In the end that means less income, and probably 15 a month does not cut it (I pay 13). This is a business after all.
Now, actual instance areas (duns, open maps, etc) actually depend on more than just the server. There's your PC, your bandwith, the network, the game's code (how it handles requests), the server... So yeah, it may not be server at all. It could be limitations on how the game was built. We got no way of knowing, but I can tell you the latency on this game is ridiculously high, and that has nothing to do with the servers :P

you all are whining about something that will fix itself in a few months

Uhmm, you know on full servers the old version of these fates are still a massive issue. Not zone lock down. But it isn't uncommon when over 100+ people start going crazy that the zone starts lagging out. It is a little late to fix this probably. But how about something better going forward.
Also to the eve idea. If 10k people were hitting a mob you would probably only need two hits which is fine as well. Or maybe they just need to adjust credit to everyone who touched it once and hope lag counts it.

This is the real problem in a nutshell, too many people on a server and wherever the masses go, they overload the systems. By limiting people going into a zone, it will address the crashing and disconnects. Its not perfect but zone limits are there for a reason. If you cant live with the limits, its time to pick up and move. I know its not a popular solution but until people leave, quit or transfer, the problems will remain.
The only other thing I can think of is for them to add an alternative to the Ixion token drop and that is to do something like 80,000 GC seals or 99 Rowena's tokens of something per piece.

Not that they think outside the box so much. But we already have items that spawn open world instances, aquapolis. Fates in the zone could drop spawn items or just spawn the portal. That would get more participation then punishing people to farm atmas/luminous in the past. But also GC seals are dropped by fates and turning them into something besides ventures is a reasonable solution as well. This is the real problem in a nutshell, too many people on a server and wherever the masses go, they overload the systems.
