I'm looking into starting a DPS because sometimes the amount of facepalming I do as a healer ...

The only advice that I can give you is to experiment. Once you experiment you may see the reasons for your face palms disparate. ( the same can go for healers. Almost get concussions do to them ) I play all 3 roles depending on needs I can cover most. Healer is my least favorite and even as a tank or dps I see some healers doing some things that lack common sense. Back to your choices I would recommend something versatile. RDM seem to be good has some healing in case of emergencies so you can help out if really is in need as a quick temp while party recovers. The only draw back is that people make it too flashy. Jumping around without taking into consideration aoes and surroundings. Timing ect. If you keep moderate distances you should be fine. Simple and story is nice. Personally I like NIN , DRG , BLM, and now SAM. DRG easy to learn, nice story as well. NIN make macros for Ninjitsu and makes things easier, BLM is more of learning to balance your spells and when to move. ( Tip: 80% casting done move and will go of ). Over all it's up to you to decide. Just remember...have fun.
