I divulge information that I believe to be of value/interest to the players wishing to perform at the highest level, and also curiosities about the inner working of the jobs that I love and dedicate thousands of hours into understanding.
I believe it's the same for the other "nerds" that also are enthusiastic about their research.
Many people do actually boorish, time-consuming and sometimes difficult tasks (collecting and analyzing data, create simulators and other tools, fitting mathematical models, raw number crunching) to optimize and understand this game that they love.
And, selflessly, they share it with all of us. And I've nothing but gratitude that someone wasted many hours so I can optimize my dps to help me clear content, or perform to the best of my ability.
I think it's extremely sad that a group of people who does not fully understand (or make an effort to understand, for the matter) what these numbers mean misuse them in such a way. In a way that's ultimately a method to try and make up for their ineptitude and laziness. Instead of understanding this content can be cleared quite efficiently with any job, they do things like this. It's double worse, because a lot of the math/research targets very high tiers of performance- which these players very likely do not belong to.
But let me say that what you're saying here... pinning this on people that divulge mostly factual research, based on a wealth of data and statistical verification, people who spent hours doing these (frankly) awesome things, is a bit heartbreaking.
Imagine if next time someone figures out an optimal rotation, or a table of stat weights, or a better way to play a job, or an optimal comp for some content, or anything at all, instead of sharing it, they decide not to.
To keep it for themselves. Because someone, somewhere, who doesn't understand what they're really talking about, misuses that knowledge to do shameful displays like these.
Imagine that if someone crunches some numbers and does some testing, and finds something clunky or unrewarding about their job, also says nothing, and SE never rectifies the issue. Imagine a FF14 where WAR is still in its 2.0 state, or AST/MCH in the 3.0 state.
Then we'd all be in the dark.
It's a passionate reply, but that's because I have a lot of respect and gratitude for people who gave tools and knowledge which helped me in this game and took almost nothing in return for them.
Don't pin this on people who do research for this very complex game.
