I agree wholeheartedly with the aim of the OP. Housing in FFXIV is features that appeals to many different types of player and should therefore be far more accessible than it currently is.

Several difficulties with a radical change in how housing works have been pointed out. What to do with existing owned housing stock is the most obvious one.

Another point is the impact on the economy more generally. Housing is one of the reasons why having gil is desirable. If you socialise housing you effectively reduce the incentive to engage in the money-making part of the game (which feeds crafters, gatherers, farming mats/materia etc). Obviously there are plenty of other things gil can buy, but it's worth bearing in mind. The economy needs very expensive, very cool stuff that only the richest can have (plus ca change...).

I get why they had to make housing the way it is now. They want you to see your neighbor down the road and what not. To have that sense of immersion. Meanwhile you have Wildstar, a very low quality MMO compared to FF and WoW, yet it has the best housing ever seen.

This is how it should be, and always should've been. I would argue that if it's still not enough, it should be 1 house per Account.
I'd second this IF I could friend my main with my alt and share house with them. Which SE for some reason doesn't allow. As it is atm though, why should my alt, with whom I play as much as with my main be forbidden to own a house?
And before people go and jump on me, no, my alt does not have a house, j only own a small house on my main character.
