console to pc: Steam or Square Enix?

so this is not really the official question.

my real question is that if weather buying the game from steam or SE affects the availability of sharing accounts?

specifically, if i purchase the game from steam, can i still use my existing console character (or progress) on my new PC.

As long as you log in on the PC using the exact same Square Enix account you login with on the console, you have access to every character you have. ...As long as you register the PC version of the game on that said same Square Enix account. I actually plan on doing this exact thing as well once I build my new PC and get a FFXIV bundle on sale for 20$ or something off steam or wherever.

Either way lets you use your existing characters so long as you add it onto your existing SE account.

There is one thing to consider, though. The Steam and non-Steam PC versions are incompatible with each other. You cannot buy the game from Steam and then add an expansion from elsewhere or vice versa. So buying from either SE or another retailer gives you a bit more flexibility for comparison shopping or picking up a good sale later on than buying through Steam does.

I've heard both from people who got frustrated at not being able to buy HW or SB from a different retailer because they'd gotten the base game from Steam and from people who were frustrated at not being able to get an expansion on Steam because they'd gotten the base game elsewhere. That tends to depend on who's offering a good sale at the time. But since there are a lot more possibilities of non-Steam sellers than there is of the singular Steam, it may be better to be locked out of one seller than to be locked in to that one.

No sales tax if you buy directly from Square either. Much like PS4 store used to be before it was taken over by its US overlords

Actually I don't get sales tax when purchasing from the PSN store. o_o Maybe it has to do with region? No idea. Either way though.
