Hi everyone,
I am an ilvl 303 Samurai who started after a 2 year break again with Stormblood. In HW, I only did Ravana Ex and Alex 1 Savage at content cap, all the others I just saw after multiple nerfs etc. at the end of 3.4. In other words, I am casual, not a raider, have no raiding guild and the last time I actually hit the content cap was on Twintania back in the day.
Now, with that background, here we go: I happened to have the day off today, so I went in and did the story to unlock Omega. Unfortunately, after the amazing Stormblood story, Omega is back to the haphazard, plot-induced-stupidity way of telling things as in ARR. Things happen because, stuff does what it does just because, and nobody knows anything, but we get a cute sidekick. I was very unimpressed.
I queued into all of these with random partyfinder on Shiva(EU) as Samurai. I never took more than 5 minutes for an invite curiously.
Omega 1: This fight is an embarassment. We killed it on our first try without any knowledge, and I think its the easiest boss ever in an 8-man (including Castrum et al.). Its just free loot, because Susano normal is more dangerous. Its also visually boring. I have no idea what happened here, but this is horrible.
Omega 2: We killed it on the second try. I like the way its gravity mechanics work, and I like the way it requires you to look a little bit for the third dimension, if only just so. Its easy, but fun. Sadly, visually its both boring and a rehash of the Halatali look, with a bit of rancor pit thrown in. The fight itself shows promise for its real version (because make no mistake, these are not normal fights that will be juiced up for Savage, these are Savage fights dumbed down to Normal, but more on that later), and if you beat Lakshmi, the item mechanic is trivial.
Omega 3: Now we are talking! Taking a page out of BC-era WoW, this fight has a lot of show, visuals, nice mechanics and forgiving yet innovative extras. Its special "phase-out" sequence is silly to a degree, but the idea is nice. Once again, I can see how the Savage version will likely be a cool fight.
Omega 4: Finally, a challenge! Sort of .... This fight ranks at about Alex 2-3 level in difficulty, because there are things to be done wrong, and I guess with a bad setup of weak jobs and undergeared people, it could be a pain. Sprint is now a combat cooldown to manageI liked this all around, we took 2 tries before killing it, which still feels easy but maybe I just had a competent group.
Music: Sadly, the score is generic and bland. I liked coil and alexander, so I am a little disappointed, and switched it off on re-runs.
Loot: as expected. I personally would have considered ilvl 315 better in light of the ease of getting it, but I suspect they want to allow people to dodge the Extremes, as they are apprently deemed too difficult for the majority.
Which leads me to my main criticism: this is undertuned completely. I am casual, I dont have gear, and I died twice in all 4 bosses together (on the successful tries, that is) as a melee. Almost every mechanic is just "lol heal through this" because MP are plentiful and numbers are low. Only the last fight needs a tankswitch, only the 3rd fight has anything to do for the offtank. Why?
Because these are watered down versions of the real fights. You can see how mechanics that you can just stand in are intended to be dodged, you can see the careful dance needed to get through Omega 3, and you can see how quickly Omega 4 can wreck your entire raid. But in Normal, almost all of these mechanics are just "loldps and heal through".
I assume either the FFXIV playerbase has grown very bad at the game over the years (since me taking a break, anyway), or SE thinks we are all both bad and unwilling to achieve anything. Quite obviously, they also seem to think the current Ex primals are too hard for the main playerbase, and should be possible to circumvent. And this saddens me.
To me, Omega is by far the worst of the 8-man releases so far, at least for now. It has basically only 2 good fights, is woefully undertuned even before the buff bonanza on the next patch, and seems to indicate SE considers us unskilled easy-to-bore players with no ability to learn.
And last but not least, KILL SOMEONE FFS! Its getting entirely predictable and boring to never ever have anyone die, or be in danger, or anything. You dont need to go all red wedding on us, but stories have no impact if everyone has plot armor 1000. This is the what, 20th time that someone is "dead" and then immediately saved, recovers, and nothing happened?
The few deaths we had over 5 years of story were low-impact for the most part (and I am sure Papalymo is showing up soon too!). This lackluster Portal-light story (because Omega is really just GlaDOS in a fantasy land) lacks any impact if it threatens to kill everyone - but cant even take out 2 bumbling comic relief side characters (who are just pop culture references, anyhow)
