I really disliked the turn Blanstyr's character took in 3.0. In 2.0, he was a confident master crafter, and he was a rival on equal terms with the ARM guildmaster, H'naanza. His point of contention with her was actually a pretty good one: Allowing novices to craft armor that's to be used in actual combat is putting the folks who wear that armor at risk. Maybe he was kind of a jerk about it, and H'naanza's stance that fresh blood is needed to bring innovation to the craft was a good counterpoint, but he wasn't wrong, either.

In 3.0, though, suddenly he was a buffoon, completely unable to meet the needs of his customers and relying on You the Armorer of Light, to pick up his slack. It was just embarrassing, watching this once-great armorer whose stuff was good enough that Merlwyb herself was willing to put it through its paces, just simply fail over and over and over.

I haven't run through the new ARM quests, yet, but I hope they do right by the guy.

Nah, he's back too- "you didn't take the clients needs into account."

Also while a rivalry can be a decent plot, the game has to give you options or the opportunity to fail a contest. When the quest literally makes you win every single contest then it becomes dull real quick.

I think HW was more about him growing as an armorsmith from softening on his stance of isolation and fierce independence to be more willing to learn and improve with an open mind than simply using him as sort of a jobber for the "Armorer of Light." He can smith with the best of them in terms of regurgitating established items, but the point of like the first quest was that while he had been making the armor all along, he really didn't understand what it was to actually wear the armor, and doing so gave him additional insight into armorsmithing and opens the doors to new innovation. Sure, they're maybe a bit too quick to make you the prodigious armorsmith in every case, but Blanstyr not being the perfect smith doesn't mean he's being a buffoon. I'm not saying it's the greatest tale ever told or anything, but I think you're selling it short.

Actually, the player DOESN'T win every single contest with Blanstyr - that was one of the things I liked most. The player loses the second of the three contests - because the WoL has to turn over the item they created to the guild to cover the slack of a newbie who'd botched their order. Blanstyr apologized for it, but insisted on accepting the win, because this was JUST the kind of thing that proved his point about newbies in the guild. I thought it was an excellently constructed story, and a great way to get around the WoL's godly crafting talent.

Perhaps I'm being too hard on the HW chapter of ARM's story. Even so, I'd have much preferred if Blanstyr's growth would have been handled by being inspired by WoL's creations and coming up with his own, rather than the WoL stomping in and filling all the orders for him.

The alchemy ones were always great. Actually looking forward to what it is in Stormblood when I get to it.

Alchemist was *very* good. So romantic!

    Also loved Armorer.

I was omni-50 once, pre-HW. Crafting just got to be too much of a chore, what with scrips, rare materials, needing to be uber-melded, and so on. So when I restarted, I only picked Weaver up, so I could make and sell cheap Hempen Camises to all the pretty women who need them

Leatherworker's was something different - not only do you have an NPC not fawning over you, she makes YOU the assistant to her, and pairs you with a little kid who is a taxidermist.

And then you make stuffed dead things together. FOR SCIENCE!!!

I've also enjoyed the DoH stories, but I think the miner one is the cutest.
