In this industry, the second you take a loss is the second you go out of business or get bought out by a bigger company if you made a loss on a startup IP -- Square Enix took a loss, true but they're a long established company that could afford to take a hit, now they feel they can begin charging for it and what loss would they take compared to when they ran the game with zero net profit? (Box sales are negated within hours of development.)
