Pretty sure that it being physical was purely a bug fix. It was never meant to be physical. *shrug*

True, just meant in the sense that the potency increase is so the damage doesn't go down too much compared to what it was since it's loosing out on poisons and buffs and all that.

It didn't occur to me that it wasn't affected by dripping blades. Guess this makes sense.
