the ffxv anime was pretty good. I'm not a fan of anime, but I enjoyed it. Seeing a mini origin story of each character was nice.

There is a japanese drama about ffxiv being aired on jp netflix that will be released in US this fall.

also for ff14 1.0 story, look up youtube videos that show the old story lines. If you dislike minfilia avoid the Ul'dah story as you see her as a child. And she is a complete brat. :/

I would love a show if it was about totally new adventures in some previous era, that is heavily referenced in the game like the war between Mhach and Amdapor or maybe during the Allagans height of power. Something distant enough that we can make connections to our time in the game, while being far enough that only really big events like the Warring Triad or the Great Flood have any plot connection.

There are far too many trapped in an mmo shows out there. Let's face it Sword Art Online was kinda cool at first but got ridiculous fast. Log horizon feels like an anime about the tutorial system. Overlord... is perfect. I enjoyed Final Fantasy Unlimited , but seemingly nobody else did. If they were going to make another attempt at anime as a company I would rather see 6.

i love overlord, and final fantasy unlimited, despite how bizarre it was lol
If they did make an anime, I would hope it wasn't a 'trapped in an mmo' story, and just an actual lore story set in the universe

If done right, it could become a win/win for SE and FFXIV.
Look at Full Metal Alchemist if you want to see how Anime licensed by Square Enix works.

In all seriousness, we'd likely get an overly-CG'd thing like Final Fantasy Unlimited which while it works as a self-contained thing, it's about as Final Fantasy as Crystal Chronicles (read, uses concepts familiar to players of FF4+ but lacks any continuity.)

A FFXIV anime could probably work if it takes a similar cue that Blade and Soul did, where the main character(s) of the anime are those characters we saw in the V1.0-V4.0 opening movies and a parallel version became the warriors of Darkness. In fact that might literately be the best way to tell the V1.0 storyline that leads into V2.0. Then each season after that could tell the lore for each thing introduced by the game during the storyline without taking away the actual storyline.

In the case of Blade and Soul, when they finally got around to releasing the game in the West, it felt... familiar from watching the anime. But I didn't play it past the point that would correlate with what happens to Yuu.

At any rate, it's best not to tell the main storyline of a game directly in an anime. Tell the storyline that the game tells, if the player only talked to the necessary characters to progress the game, like it would probably look like this:

    12 Episodes for V1.0
Episode 1, Ul'dah - Our "main character" casually referred to as the derplander Hyur Warrior here (Arbert) on the forums re-creates the V1.0 opening with Thancred and F'lhaminn, and Ascilla
Episode 2, Limsa Lominsa - We get Blanhaerz The Roegadyn Paladin, and Naillebert the Elezen Black Mage with Y'shtola
Episode 3, Gridania - We get our Lalafell White Mage (Lamimi) and Miqo'te Bard (J'rhoomale) replaying the Gridania opening with Yda and Papalymo

Because the V1.0 storyline isn't terribly important for Limsa Lominsa and Gridania, those can respectively be condensed into one episode each and then in the 4th episode the entire team re-creates part of the V1.0 opening move with the correct designs. (Take note that in the V1.0 movie, aside from Limsa Lominsa being wrong, Arbert is the Archer, Blanhaerz is the Marauder, Lamimi is a Black Mage, and there is a female Elezen gladiator that never shows up again AFAIK.

With every episode after this, we start with a pan down from the moon that later is the climax and ending of V1.0

Content wise, Episode 5-10 show us the lore behind the dungeons, in particular showing us a non-frozen Coerthas and a reason to go there.

Episode 11 closes the loose ends that never got closed with the Garleans
Then Episode 12 ends with what ended V1.0

    12 Episodes for V2.0
Episode 1 does a flashback to Ul'dah and waking up on a cart like the V2.0 starting cutscene, but our friends from V1.0 don't repeat this. Rather they just mysteriously wake up in an Inn like nothing happened, but 5 years passed, and everyone has the tattoo. So to cut to the chase everyone is gathered right at the beginning of the first episode with a tiny flash back. We ignore the twins until they actually become plot-pertinent.

So yadda yadda, Ifirit is summoned, Titan is summoned, Garuda is summoned, Nero activates Ultima Weapon and then at Episode 9 basically condense Castrum Merididian, and the Praetorium and Thancred is rescued. Episode 10 Do the Binding Coil storyline condensed, Episode 11, do the Crystal Tower, Episode 12, Steps of Faith.

    Then 12 episodes for HW/Alexander/Void-Ark.

Presumably by the time this finishes We will be on V5.0 or V6.0 and Stormblood could be animated.

The anime could get people interested in playing the game, OR it could fall flat on it's face, which is why I suggest re-jigging the V1.0 storyline to better fit with the later patches.

As for 12 and not 24 episodes, most anime and cartoons have switched to the 12/13 episode format per season because it better fits the 1 episode every week format/season.

As for if it's a good idea or not, I'm a little leery of trying to to tell the exact story in an anime because the only anime/video game that has managed to do so without screwing things up terribly was .Hack//Sign + .Hack the PS2 series + .hack//Liminality the OAV that went with the game. If you tell the exact same story, you aren't giving players anything "new" in the game then. On the other hand, many players just skip through the flavor text anyway and skip cut scenes. So an anime may actually prove to fill in the blanks.

Yet, producing an anime would allow sharing the merchandising for the game, so even if it doesn't create any new players, it does drive merchandise sales.

You know they could simply do the Hildebrand Anime as a stand-alone thing (consider that the WoL is little more than a background character in all of it.) Do it in the Super-Deformed 90's style as a gag anime and you have no risks of people taking it seriously.

Here's my question: Will said anime feature cameos of the WoL (or other adventurers representing player characters) stoically nodding?

I would fully support and religiously watch a FFXIV anime because let's face, Tataru with big anime eyes would be pretty much the greatest thing to ever happen in life. as for the story it could either follow the various NPCs we've met on our travels, or it could focus on something like following the scions while we're out doing all their dirty work for very little pay.
or any number of ideas that could make it work.

hell they could even make it a high school comedy where the scions are an after school club :P

SE recently released a FFXIV Light Novel, alot of Light Novels get adapted into a anime. If the Light Novel is popular, maybe they will adapt it into an anime?

Anime yes, when it have Au Ra, too! Dont need another generic catgirl-only anime.

    What about a Edda-Horror-Movie? >: D

I think they will take a safe route and make it a tale where the hero: a Midlander Hyur, his best friend: male Lalafell and the perky female Miqo'te. The female lead will be a Miqo'te that race + gender combo is way to popular for SE to ignore.
