no mention of .hack? shame..... that kinda was the first stuck in mmo anime. There are far too many trapped in an mmo shows out there. Let's face it Sword Art Online was kinda cool at first but got ridiculous fast. Log horizon feels like an anime about the tutorial system. Overlord... is perfect. I enjoyed Final Fantasy Unlimited , but seemingly nobody else did. If they were going to make another attempt at anime as a company I would rather see 6.

this could have been a FFXIV anime..., why not do a FF or FFXIV anine Square-Enix instead??... why??.. ir us this a warm-up/experiment before SE does a FFXIV anime?
even though I'd prefer a bit more mature main-characters than what this new project hints
They can always base it as a backstory for some popular NPCs.
I will agree to this on one condition:
It's a Hildibrand anime.
Could definitely see them doing this, especially when they've already done something similar with Tales from the Calamity and the Dragonsong war. They can totally do something like Pokemon Origins and make small episodes that focus on different events (excluding the main character).
Imagine an episode focused on the Rogue guild doing a mission to save Limsa or an episode following Estinien on his journey to redemption and etc.
I wouldn't mind it so long as the Warrior of Light and the Scion's weren't the focus. The mere idea of them retelling ARR in particular sends shivers of dread down my spine over the mere thought of having to re-experience that wasteland of broken potential once more. However if they were to focus on other characters of even other areas of the world I would not mind it in the slightest. Hells, I'd love a show about the fall of Doma and/or Ala Mhigo twenty years past. I think there's a lot of potential there.
Very conveniently OP did not mention PSO2. A by all accounts horrible anime that even got tied in to the story in-game ruining all semblance of interesting lore the game had.
I'll agree on four conditions: Whoever does the anime in Japan cannot handle the US license at all (ie Aniplex of America cannot have the license if the Japan branch has it). 2: It cannot be hidden behind a double paywall (amazon strike comes to mind here as an example). 3: VA's from the game MUST reprise their roles (for the sake of 2.0/3.0 VA's, whoever cannot reprise will use the VA from 4.0). 4: it must come out on home video (not years after it was made in English, like Sidonia, NETFLIX!) and be affordable.
We've had shows about MMOs before, but they, uh... vary in quality- Wakfu's show is generally really good, but Ragnarok's Animated series was... well, not.
If we look at Square Enix's original works, theyre not really as good, I think. At its best they've made stuff that's great for fans, but not for a general audience.
The point is, there's a lot of potential for failings in a show like this depending on how they approached it. I think I'd only waych a FFXIV anime if it was made by outside writers and a good studio.
I think maybe the best way to tackle this is to make original characters the focal point- maybe a representation of each race in the protagonist party
