As for a revamp, how about some dodging logic. You know, if there is big circular AoE on the ground and I run out of it, my bird should follow me.

Or simpler yet, which would let it avoid at least 75% of all attacks:

Have the bird attempt to attack its target from behind whenever possible. I try to face the mob away from the bird but sometimes it isn't feasible to, or sometimes I'm in the middle of dodging another mob's AoE when my mob decides to hork up some pain from its mouth and of course the dumb bird isn't smart enough to stay behind it.
