I guess the best example I can think of is from FFXI. There were skill-chains and if done correctly would do much bigger damage. On top of that a mage (preferably BLM) could add a magic burst on top of the skill-chain damage for big damage. All of this had to be well-timed or it didn't work. Also one had to know what weaponskills would produce what skill-chain and the caster had to cast a spell which worked with that particular element.
