    New Player: Went ROG

Hey! I'm a new player and I went PGL (Lvl 16) then ROG (Lvl 26).

    A Couple of questions:

What is the best way to play in raids to benefit the party?

And, does anyone know if a lvl 50 ROG can become a Samurai or would i have to get my PGL to lvl 50 then become one? (I know im a long way from that point, but thought I would ask just so I can have an idea)

    Thanks you all!!

The best thing you can do for your party is to know how to do your job (proportional to your level and abilities), and research the boss fights ahead of time.** There are many video tutorials such as MTQ Capture, and Mr. Happy (on YouTube)

As for Samurai, they have no base class. Rogues become Ninja. Pugilists become Monks.

In order to unlock Samurai, all you have to do is have ANY combat class at level 50. Then an NPC will become available in Ul'Dah who will unlock Samurai for you.

Best part - Samurai starts at level 50 - not level 1. So you'd have a level 50 Ninja (or MNK if you went the Pugilist route) and a level 50 Samurai.

** EDIT: If you don't want to spoil your experience in dungeons by watching video tutorials ahead of time, that's fine. Just be on your toes. Lower level dungeons are extremely forgiving because they are meant to teach you how to do your job and work with fight mechanics.

I'm not sure what exactly you mean by the dungeons question, but here are some general melee DD tips.

How to read the target circle for flank/rear
When targeting things, take note of the circle on the ground around the target. At the front is an arrow that designates "front". In the back, part of the circle is missing to indicate "rear". The sides, including just outside the rear gap, are "flank". Your goal is to move as little as possible, while still being in the right position for your attacks. You can achieve this by parking at the boundary between rear and flank, and stepping just slightly one way or the other. When you eventually get to fight extremely large targets, standing in this spot will let you hit your positions instantly whereas doing literal 90º flanks and rears will take up to 3s each time you switch positions.

What to do if the other DD or the healer is AoEing
If you are in an AoE party, and you cannot AoE effectively yourself, your goal is not to kill anything, but to weaken everything that has more health than the rest of the group. Say there are five targets. If you kill one, your DD buddy who is AoEing will start doing only 80% of the damage he was doing with all five alive. If another ones dies, he drops to 60%. Worse, if you happen to kill the mob in the middle, your DD buddy might no longer have a central mob that they can target so the AoE hits the whole group. By switching to the targets with the most health, groups will die faster overall even though individually they are not dying off quickly.

How to make WARs comm you
As a role ability, you'll eventually learn Goad. This ability gradually restores TP to a party member other than yourself. Slot it, and you'll be able to help out the tank or your DD buddy if one is AoEing a lot and running low on TP.

    How to job
Following the Lv30 class quests and a job unlock quest, PGL becomes MNK, and ROG becomes NIN. These jobs are upgraded versions with boosted stats and access to specialized actions.

In case you want to MNK
If you decide to go back to PGL/MNK, be aware that a few of your abilities are granted in an order that will encourage you to arrange them on your hotbar wrong. For PGL/MNK, you get Bootshine, True Strike, Snap Punch, and will be inclined to make these 1-2-3. Make Snap Punch alt-3 (or whatever modifier you use for your second bar) instead. At MNK30, you'll get Demolish. This is the real 3. Dragon Kick (Lv50) is alt-1 and Twin Snakes (Lv18) is alt-2. This way, 1-2-3 are all your Rear attacks, while a1-a2-a3 are your Flank attacks. This will decrease the cognitive load as you're trying to figure out which button is what form and what position.

    Killing coeurlkittens
If you continue with ROG/NIN, know that Rhalgr kills a coeurlkitten every time you use Doton on a single target.

SAM requires any job at 50. It matters not which. Striking gear is equipable by PGL MNK SAM, but you don't specifically have to level MNK to unlock SAM.
