Right after that scene, if you talk to Thancred, he says "You would be surprised what skills an urchin can pick up in a city of pirates. A knack for selling fine leather waistcoats being one..."

In Monkey Island, and other LucasFilm/Arts games, it's "fine leather jackets," which I think was first mentioned in the Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade adventure game.
