A feedback respons to the Square Enix announcement: http://eu.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodest...4529c74e490ee5
Description - (Problem/Solution)
It is publicly known through your recent announcements, that server resources are currently a larger concern, at least big enough to warrent server restarts. One such suggestion to fix this, would be to make use of alternative (or additional) constructive incentive means for both players and Square Enix alike, to combat circumvented auto-logout due to inactivity during game play. Such a method could be removing or minimizing the needs to stay logged in while being away (afk), which could make both players and Square Enix happy. Incentives to move to other worlds (servers) is great and all, but further and less obvious incentives might have the possibility of making a bigger overall positive difference on the server load in combination with the current solutions, especially for those who do not wish to migrate to another server. From the specific modern sub-category of marketing, "Servicemarketing", Service Gaps can be tricky as it may not always be easy to see it from the customers perspective, i.e. the reason as to why a customer want to stay logged in, and working on fixing it so everyone is happy.
One such factor among the service gaps here, may highly likely be customers loose of chats, or inability to receive chats from the social community we the players take part in. Solving this issue may reduce, or possibly even remove the problematic need/interest to try stay logged in to the game, ultimately freeing up pressures server resources. There may be cheap solutions to do so, or expensive ones. If the cheap solution is worth it the effort, then a discussion whether the expensive solution may be worth it too is kind of off-topic, as this is about seeking another approach to solve the problem, and not the details on such an approach. Albeit such a discussion could be good as well, for example whether to make a simple cheap solution that preserves chats up to 30 minutes before the game auto-disconnected, or the more expensive solution, to have chat clients i.e. in the login tool itself. The latter may seem to free less resources due to development cost of such a chat feature in the login client, but in contrast it gives greater control of the resources when the load/burden is segmented on different servers. I.e. less demanding chat servers tjat run on less resources than in-active characters on the game servers, the cost difference between such servers will be the saving cost. Furthermore for the latter option, having a means to chat while not logged in, also further removes incentives to try stay logged in by circumventing the auto-disconnect. It even makes it possible to not login to the game servers, if all you want to do in that period of time is simply to chat with the community inside the game.
The problem on PS4 may be different
I'm aware the solution may differ for PC/PS4, but at least to my knowledge, it is also easier to avoid auto-disconnection on PC's, so a PC solution seems viable. Maybe PS4 have smart means to avoid the auto-disconnect as well? But I'm not aware of such methods, and it seems less straight forward to do, at the very least.
The answer "players are simply just too lazy to log back in again coming back from (afk), and therefore try to circumvent it" is unlikely. Here's why this is caused by a missing game feature, rather than game culture or player behaviour.
I have not seen Square Enix say this, nor even hint towards it, but I'll say this anyways, as the buttom line is important and central to the issue. It is unlikely for players to try circumvent the auto-disconnect after i.e. 30 minutes of inactity out of sheer lazyness to login again when coming back. The hazzle to make a home-made "slow spinning screwdriver" system or other smart creative ways to hit the keyboard to avoid auto-disconnection, seems bigger than the actual hazzle of having to login again after getting disconnected. But whom am I to say? People are different, but I just find it unlikely that most people would do it out of lazyness, because such a system require more work to implement/maintain than to actually just... well... logging back in again (which is quick and easy). It is most likley a loose of something of value, i.e. missing out on important chats which get cleared away after logging out.
In other words, the problem is caused by a lack of feature to meet customer satisfaction, and the customer take the solution into their own hands, which in turn causes a load on your servers.
No feedback forum for the game, only website feedback forums?
I must apologize, I cannot find a feedback forum for the game itself, so I'll post it here where I believe it will the most close forum match. Hopefully you can channel it to the right place if better channels are available. I do not expect an answer either, I just hope this post can help, and maybe other users can confirm/disconfirm or suggest other reasons/solutions to the staying logged into the game issue.
To other players: Confirmation/disconfirmation, or alternative ideas
I don't really mind if anyone has better ideas or mention reasons why this suggestion won't work, etc. I only post this to help fix the problem, whether the solution lies elsewhere or not, is outside my scope or attention. I'm only giving feedback, I expect no answers, but I do hope other players will contribute to any kind of feedback here, whether in support for the idea or against it, other ideas, etc.
Of course assuming if you have read this far on a topic that may or may not be deemed a boring subject, as it has little to do with just wanting to enjoy the game and more to do with Square Enix saving server costs to meet market demandBut if you made it this far, I encourage you to post your feedback too! Even if it discredits my suggestion, clarity is important.
Having said that, I must also applaud Square Enix for working on different fixes on the login queus/game-lag. As a newer player to Square Enix games, this really stands out and I highly appreciate it. It makes me want to support the company even more when they care about good customer experiences. Unlike other, ..ahem.. *cough* so called "Companies", out there in the wild wild west of business.
I must apologize once more for choosing to post here due to the missing appropriate forum section, and the long read as well. Hopefully it was worth it, if not then then all is still well between us ~ I hope![]()
