I'm in a roleplay community on Excalibur, I still think this might affect my datacenter, despite Balmung not being there, as Excalibur is a legacy server, and home to a lot of long time players.

We have party finder, don't we? There needs to be a better way to facilitate roleplayers other than shunting them, accounts and all, into one or two servers.

You sure? Because if they did what you mention the cries and complaints will reach epics proportions. Aion tried this to keep factions and server balanced by preventing the creation of any new character and boy the drama at release. The only solution here is acting like a "Tyrant", you create the char a SE pick the server for example, and that's bad for business.

Sure SE is not helping but the main cause of all these problems are the players.

The playerbase is just as much to blame here.

While not ideal for established communities, SE have decided that transfers are the only feasible solution since it appears that for whatever reason they can't do anything to address server capacity.

They've offered their solution and it's hardly their fault if people are being stubborn about it as a result.
SE is at fault for not locking the server at 3.0 but they were happy to collect their transfer $$.

Now that the server is locked the RP community will split it has already started on Mateus and will continue as long as they don't open up the server again

    I have a couple questions.

What happens if you log in just before the simultaneous logout? Sucks to be you.

What will happen with DPS queues? This might fatten up tank mercs wallets.

But really, it's thanks to these circumventers that people who wanted to transfer couldn't even do that if they couldn't even access their rooms/retainers.

What are you expecting to happen? Because I see this as beneficial more than anything. An hour warning is still enough to queue and finish a dungeon for most, with the added bonus of kicking players to make room for more people that might queue up.

This is only enough for tanks and healers...us DD are waiting too long to be able to run a dungeon when they announce it. Yesterday I was waiting nearly 50 minutes before I could do the dungeon which often takes 25+ minutes. Also lets not forget that after story dungeons you will have cutscenes too that people might want to watch..so no as soon as they announce it you can stop going into the instance as a DD.

Instead of punishing their customers maybe they should have looked into renting additional server space just like WoW does..how will this go if FF14 becomes more popular? They cant always just look away and hope that stuff will fix itself..especially since that means that people dont stick with the game.

Letter from the Producer LIVE Part IX Q&A Summary (10/30/2013)
Q: Will there be any maintenance fees or other costs for housing, besides the cost of the land and house?
A: In older MMOs, such as Ultima Online, there was a house maintenance fee you had to pay weekly, but in FFXIV: ARR we decided against this system. Similarly, these older MMOs also had a system where your house would break down if you didn’t log in after a while in order to have you continue your subscription, but this is a thing of the past and we won't have any system like that.

That's assuming that FFXIV's server architecture has that kind of scalability.

Well if they dont then what will happen in the future? I mean comparing the numbers of FF14 players to WoW its still away from that and yet they have problems. They are doing lots of advertisement and stuff that makes it easier for new players to join, so it seems that they want to have more players. But at the same time the servers cant handle them. What if people enjoy the expansion and most will stay? Will a long waiting time become normal?

If you lose someone because they are done with the content and are bored you might get them back with new exiting content but I am not sure if you will get someone back that went away because they could barely play the game and felt that the Devs dont do enough. That is some kind of negative point that might stick with the person so they might not want to come back at all.

Especially people on balmung that there WILL be "extreme login issues" among some other issues.
This is why they gave people a chance to change servers to something smaller and even went out of their way to reward players who did so.
So you are saying that people should be "compensated" for their own inaction and their own stupidity? Puuuhleeease.
Oh there is a MMO called WoW that did compensate its playerbase after the WoD launch with free playtime. And the same MMO managed to do a nearly perfect launch of Legion. A business that wants to be on the top cant go around and look at those that do it worse or the same and say that they are better than that and so it should be enough. No they should look at those that are better than them and try to get there too. And if you are the best you should try to stay that too since in a competition you can always be kicked from the top by someone else if you stay as you are and believe to not do anything.

Also Omega the new server also had waiting lines of 1000 people or more for some so its not like this is only a Balmung problem.

There is zero excuse for this band-aid attempt at "fixing" people abusing AFK timer. I don't know why I keep seeing people trying to justify it.

Any adjustments to the auto afk kick feature would require development time and testing time.

It would not be ready in time for it to be of any use for our current situation.
It still needs to be done for the next time, but it wouldn't help now.

I understand it is worse on big servers but smaller servers shouldn't be subjected to this as well.
The article itself states that people are avoiding the afk logout feature, and this is in response to it.

This whole 'please don't say anything even slightly negative' mentality that we seem to be going towards and the devs seemingly pushing towards it is creating a disturbing trend.
