Blame Balmung for this....

It might be a presumptuous for me to guess, but it likely has to to do with server architecture rather than malice towards the Aether server cluster users. The housing servers that people are afk crafting in are likely shared between the servers on the cluster, the same goes for the lobby and instance servers too. To properly force afkers in Balmung to log off, they have to take down these servers for everyone rather than trying to target the Balmungers in them which is not only more time consuming and inefficient but also far more error proned. At that point you may as well just have an entire server cluster purge rather than just the shared ones, since the server architecture probably isn't meant to deal with the complete absence of the shared servers.
Don't grab your torches and pitchforks yet, these actions are perfectly reasonable when viewed not as an act of malice or malevolence but instead as basic protocols that they perform all the time for forcing people off for maintenance periods.

Do you realize that being afk for hours could be considered like a violation of ToS that makes they could just ban your account rather than just kicking afk players?

INB4 lobby server crashes because thousands of players are trying to log in at the same time.
INB4 the queue times during prime time don't change noticeably and all we get out of this is more inconvenience.
INB4 dps players can't do any DF instances for at least 1.5 hours every day with these queue times.![]()
In this specific case new character transfers are included. Balmung should have just been closed. No transfer, no new characters, nothing, unless enough people transfer away or delete characters.

Had to check time hadn't regressed back to 1st April upon reading this.
I don't care which server you're on, this is unacceptable. Is it the fault of myself or friends that SE can't mitigate overpopulation issues ahead of time? I've been here since Balmung was formed. How do you fix this? Close us off to transfers sooner. Fix the loophole where you can make a character on here as soon as maintenance ends. Patch the "afk on retainer / craft" issue. Make a new "official RP server". Offer these incentives months ago instead of when the tension is highest. Do something proactive instead of reactive.
It already takes us four hours to log in at certain times of the day, and for a lot of us, it's peak EU times. Some of my friends just don't even bother any more. So you tell me: how is it fair that those who do manage to get online are forcibly removed a random amount of time later? How is it going to affect duties in progress if people just disappear? What if those are tanks or healers you've been waiting 40-50 minutes for in a DF queue, only to have the process slammed down upon you AGAIN?
Don't blame the playerbase for this problem. And most certainly do not hate people on Balmung. Do you think we find this acceptable either? No. We do not.
Then why do you stay there ? If it's unacceptable just pick your friends and move to a less populated server while transfert is free
People don't know how to take criticism anymore, and bad play is rewarded with with a coddling mentality. Yes, this is a casual game for the most part - that doesn't mean people need to walk on eggshells in fear of getting reported for pointing out things. This whole 'please don't say anything even slightly negative' mentality that we seem to be going towards and the devs seemingly pushing towards it is creating a disturbing trend.

You seem to think everyone is perfectly okay with leaving everything they have on a server to move to a completely different one with possibly no one else they know. It's a strange assumption, if that is what you are thinking.
It's almost as if I said "or the like" for a reason...You don't have to 'abuse crafting' to avoid being logged out. It's anything that prevents your character from moving: Crafting, talking to a quest npc, interacting with an aetheryte/aethernet crystal, retainer bell, aesthetician, etc... there are countless ways of doing it.
Then stay and enjoy the queue, if staying in Balmung queue is more important to you than play on another server you have my blessing, just stop punishing us.
As I said, leaving was not easy but I won't pay 15€ a month to stay in queue, if you are willing to, fine
