I'm raising two points in this post;
- Side quest for non-DoW/DoM
- Choices of approach for side quest
I feel irked at moments during a DoW/DoM quest where it could have been written for a DoH or DoL class instead.
For example; A Hypocritical Oath (a bit of a spoiler)
The quest requires you to find a seed called Sheepbur Seed. However, the quest giver says don't bother trying to find the plant that produces this seed because it is hard to find. Instead he suggest that you go pick off seeds from antelopes because it by chance sticks to their furry hides. Thus, the adventurer goes out and slays the antelopes for some seeds.
So, as a 'hardcore' gamer mind set, this of course does not phase me. I'm 'used' to these mundane task, and 'taught' to kill everything because the quest demands so. It's an 'adventure' because 'adventuring' is to slay monsters.
However, in a designer mind set, I take a look at this and wonder, why can't this be a DoL quest? Why am I not given the choice to use my botanist skills here to look for the plant and harvest the seeds? Would this be more enjoyable if I were given a choice to harvest the seeds instead of slaying antelopes? Maybe, maybe not...
You might have recalled there are quests that offers choices of how you complete them; the main scenario quests. However, realize those quest have very little to do with the skills provided by DoH/DoL classes. It was horribly executed with the end goal of just allowing DoH/DoL to participate, and they were all participating with parley. The player does not and can not use the skills or abilities which defines the DoH/DoL class at all in those quest.
Either way, that is just my point of view. I've been conditioned into the usual flow of a linear quest, so it's bearable and become something that's expected. But, should we be given choices to how to finish a quest? Or bigger question, should there even be any side quest added for non-DoW/DoM classes? (more than task boards?)
