Leveling confusion

I'm a bit confused. Do class quests only go to 30? Then you start your job and run its quests from 30 to cap? But MSQ go from 1 all the way to cap? Just looking for some clarity. My main goal is machinist. So I'm guessing level msq all the way to 70. Archer to 30. Pugilistic to at least 15. Then bard till machinist is available which is at 50 correct?

Main story is the... main story of the game. It tells the story of how a wandering adventurer(you) showed up in gridania one day, and after many trials and tribulations went on to save the world repeatedly. So yeah, that goes from level 1-they stop making the game. You play as a class from level 1-30, so class quests. You play as a job from 30-the end, so job quests for that. If your goal is machinist, then bard(pugilist is no longer required) until you get inside the city of Ishgard(probly around level 50-52) which is where you can receive the training. Machinist starts at level 30, so youll have to take a short break from main story quests when you first unlock, but once you get caught back up you just continue onward using a gun instead of a bow.

Base classes can level to 70, but you will not have any skills past level 30.

Jobs come after classes and if you level for example, Dragoon to 46, the Lancer will be 46 also. Jobs go up to lvl 70.

Machinist, DRK, and Astro do not require any pre-existing classes and do not have any bas classee. You just need one class at 50 and to reach Foundation in the MSQ. When you get those classes, they will start at level 30.

At any time you can switch jobs and even switch back to the base classes. You can continue the MSQ on any class high enough, or level Machinist to the required level if you want to use that for the rest of the MSQ.
