As a BLM, not using AOEs is a crime which is only punishable by all other BLM quad-flaring that person to death.Tbh, DPS didnt know their rotation in HW either.
The other day I had a rdm in my lvl dungeon who only did single target damage, and when I asked her why she said RDM AoE isnt really great. (excuuuuuuuuse me....)
my RDM was only lvl 58 at that time but I already could name at least 3 applicable AOE skills for her to use and told her that she would be slowing down
the run unnecessarily by A LOT by not using it. So she she did start using it and even thanked me later for my advice o_O (I swear hell froze over that moment.)
But seriously...why do DPS shy away from using AoE? Efficiency aside, its also frickin fun to see your screen spammed with numbers?!
That factor on its own is what puzzles me the most about people not using it.
The first times in a duty, even if guides have been read, I prioritize extra attention to aoes, markers over head and adds before 100% rotation. If there's a lot to pay attention to. Shiva EX comes to mind. A dead dps won't do any damage at all.
Edit: also, of all the thousands of people playing this game, you can't honestly expect all of them to know everything, however obvious it may seem to you and your experienced self. I remember my first time playing an mmo. (Dabbled with wow back then). I enjoyed the vast landscapes and knowing the other characters were real people. It was mindblowing back then. But I was overwhelmed by the amount of abilities, and I had absolutely no idea there even existed designated roles in parties. Someone snarled "let the tank do the tanking", and I genuinely had no idea what that meant, or why they were angry. Sure, I've learned my way around this since then, but I still remember when I was new.

It's the same as looking at someone elses sheet for the answers. Just because it's a resource, doesn't mean you should use it. I don't do the math at all. I do what feels and seems right and logical and it's good enough for me. I'm not here to be a perfectionist and copy what others do, even if it's the most optimal rotation. Now, if I was horrible and not one of the top DPS in my raid groups, maybe I would look for help but I don't need it.How is looking at guides cheating? A lot of times, they have done more math at the best possible rotation then you ever will because it is a collection of people working on it then one individual. In my opinion, you are gimping yourself by not using resources available to help improve your game-play.
Give it a few more weeks and people will be more comfortable with new rotations (which btw are still in flux for some classes...) Having said that - I personally never worry about these ridiculous "openers" people post. I'm not going through a 50 step opener to eek out a minute amount of additional DPS that for 99% of content makes no difference. Sure, if you are doing cutting edge savage content or enjoy min/maxing your nerd scores on FF14logs- by all means, have fun.
'Cuz aoe skills don't put out da BIG NUMBAHS! Just lots and lots of li'l numbahs. Sure, those li'l numbers add up, but who wants to math??? I just crit for sixty buzillion, whoohoo! D:
Seriously, though, I've know folks who actually look at the tooltips, see that "100 potency in an aoe" and wonder why they'd EVER use that instead of the 360 potency single-target skill - especially since the aoe drains so much TP. 360 is so much bigger than 100, right? It's the honest truth, some folks just don't understand the math behind this stuff.
Well then, lets make a crusade and crucify every player that isnt very good at the game. Or...we could do the unimaginable thing of....helping them.
Darn... it almost makes you wish the game had some sort of system that a group of people would help new and lower skillset players....Oh wait....
You. You are stopping me. Each thread you create is one dungeon where I completely ignore my rotation.
Sams, monks, ninjas, dragoons its like they dont even know what aoe is , But now on my pali I will certainly be using mine
