Returning player confused about how to become a BLM

Picking a company happens shortly before the quests that unlock the job stones(sylphic management for most classes), so thats a likely culprit. The quest seems rather arbitrary, but they probly picked it thinking that few people would be almost 10 levels ahead of the story by that point in the game. Honestly the level 30 ability isnt amazing for BLM. Maybe work on the story and when you get to 35 go back and get the stone plus do the 2nd quest while youre there? Its a thought.

Freeze at 35 isn't that useful, either. Manaward at 30 has gotten a little more useful since they rolled in -ward and -wall together, and Convert isn't entirely terrible.

But aside from the ability, the job stone also comes with stat boosts, and those are nice.

Yes, the story requirement I thought was rather pointless. My GLD is level 31 and I haven't even got to the point where you join the Scions yet.

That doesn't make the story requirement pointless. Just the opposite. It's precisely the issue that the story requirement was put in place to address.

Too many people were leveling up doing other random things and not playing through the story, so they added a requirement that if you're more than ten levels above your progress, you need to start doing a bit of that catch up. Most of the game is unlocked through the main scenario, and if you're not following that, then you'll miss a lot else besides just the job upgrade.

When SE originally put in the requirement, it was mostly players who didn't realize how important the main scenario is to the game who were being hit with it. Now it's coming up a bit more, though, because of all the XP boosting that SE has added in since. Now, even if you do nothing else besides the main story, you'll still over-level it through those early levels unless you alternate its quests between multiple classes. But getting more than 10 levels above it is still probably a sign you should do a bit more questing.
