I'd ignore him. If the guy is gauging DPS on a normal dungeon then he is just a prick.Well I've only been playing a few months, having just managed to get through the MSQ before SB arrived, and now just managed that.
Before SB changes I'd just got the hang of my rotation on BLM, so SB changes are giving me a few issues at the moment with having to try and relearn it.
Just did Kugane Castle and got a load of abuse from the tank telling me my DPS is dreadful and I need to learn to play my class. He apparently was using some sort of parse to know what everyones dps was.
Is this normal for new players to experience? To get a load of crap from people who've been playing a long time? I don't mind constructive tips to improve as I know I'm new to the game, but outright targetted abuse just makes me question investing any time into the character.
If this is the 'norm' then the ingame community is just as bad as WoW's and that was like a cesspool.
You don't need a parser to tell if someone is not playing correctly if you have at least a basic comprehension of a job. It's even easier with BLM and RDM because you can see what they are casting. Not sure how they could tell what your DPS is as all parsers are currently broken, as that is normal with every patch. Khaidal is right though, it's not normal, but you might still hear of stories from newer players about older players telling them what to do. That's usually done for friendly advice and not meant to demean.

If only the date of the search results returned was visible. Actually it would be great if Google had a date limiter for searches, so you didn't end up with info from 2017.I think unintentional thread necromancy (as opposed to deliberate thread necromancy, which is definitely a thing) is probably via forum search, or Google search returning results in the forums. Search engines are not... great at biasing recent topics as higher-weighted results, sometimes.
Oh, wait...

It's not normal for new players no.
But eventually, everyone finds out they've been playing wrong, or poorly, or something.
The joy of a public forum is that it's information still accessible outside it's relevancy to the original poster. Someone else with a similar situation may find this, as such continuing to provide information is helpful to the community.

necromancy is legal in cyrodiil but few will openly admit to practicing it now that the mages guild has banned it

Don't mind me as I queue roulettes for classes I don't play for the sole purpose of getting XP so I can level and get titles. Not everyone mains every single class or should be expected to perform at the level of someone who does. If you do, more power to you.1) You want to remove that link right now. Naming and shaming is not tolerated here.
2) With a few months of experience and a level 70 character you're not excatly "new" anymore, at least not in my book - I'll probably sound like a jerk too, but I expect someone at level 70 to know how to play
3) Not excatly normal - but we also dont know what happend here. Right now I dont want to judge over wether or not he was actually rude or just not suger coating that your dps was bad and you need to look into your class more.
4) Parsing and shaming someone for that is a reportable offense -> thats your way to go there.
Please realise though that level 70 with several months of playing means you're not new anymore and actually expected to perform well on your basic class rotations and such. If you're unsure: Please look up guides, find BLMs to ask for advice, play around with your class on a dummy or something - but stop using that excuse in a level 70 dungeon.

I'll bring up a time when an old FC buddy of mine hit level 70 back during ShB, and needed to run Ala Mhigo. He's a WAR main, and I went ahead and tagged along as a DPS I was leveling. I never grouped with him before, and his tanking was bad. Like really, really bad. The healer in our group was super pissed, and it was tough to defend my FC buddy because what the healer was saying was all true. I tried to defuse the situation by just giving some tips, and big pulls were definitely out of the question. We did make it through, and man the Zenos fight was also rough.Well I've only been playing a few months, having just managed to get through the MSQ before SB arrived, and now just managed that.

Afterwards, he was really down in spirits. His tanking at that level shouldn't have been that bad, and it was easy for me to recognize the obvious. He had little experience, and everyone he has grouped with just dealt with his tanking.
I brought this up first and foremost to let you know that a player does not need to use ACT to know your damage is lackluster. You play the game enough, and you just know when things are taking too long to kill. You can tell when content is under tuned, or if enrage windows are tight. The second reason is to let you know that my FC buddy pushed passed the criticism from the healer, as tough as it was, and used it as motivation to improve his game. The next time I grouped with him his tanking was vastly improved.
I can't judge the tank who told you your DPS was bad. I wasn't there, and he/she likely has their side of this story as well. Players can be harsh sometimes, and that player might not be a jerk, and could just be having a bad day and is normally much more tolerable. We just don't know. It's the internet. What I can tell you is to not get discouraged. You've picked one of the hardest jobs to play well with BLM. This is a good thing though, because it gives you such a vast plane in which TO improve. You will face bosses who will just make you say, "F...M....L" Again, use this as incentive to get better.
Also, there is no need to run the content that is the level of your BLM. Take no shame in running lower level content to hone your skillset and spell casting. If a fight gives you trouble, stay on it until you are satisfied with your performance. Patience. Practice. Persevere.
