Getting abuse for DPS as a fairly new player - normal?

Well I've only been playing a few months, having just managed to get through the MSQ before SB arrived, and now just managed that.

Before SB changes I'd just got the hang of my rotation on BLM, so SB changes are giving me a few issues at the moment with having to try and relearn it.

Just did Kugane Castle and got a load of abuse from the tank telling me my DPS is dreadful and I need to learn to play my class. He apparently was using some sort of parse to know what everyones dps was.

Is this normal for new players to experience? To get a load of crap from people who've been playing a long time? I don't mind constructive tips to improve as I know I'm new to the game, but outright targetted abuse just makes me question investing any time into the character.

If this is the 'norm' then the ingame community is just as bad as WoW's and that was like a cesspool.

You can report people for harassing you about your damage numbers if they allude to the idea that they're using a parser. You can also check out https://ffxiv.consolegameswiki.com/wiki/Stone,_Sky,_Sea and work on your rotation if you aren't yet comfortable. In any case it's possible you were playing really poorly in which case I can understand where the tank is coming from but it sounds like he was being unreasonably rude.

Not really normal for anyone I know of, with maybe the exception of raid content but then again I play on a Japanese server so i wouldn't even know If i was being abused but I doubt i have been based on how quiet the chats usually are in standard dungeons. When I played on an NA server I got a lot of rude people when playing as tank and made mistakes but generally speaking I'd just laugh it off or ignore them. You could report them if it bothers you that much but that's really your call.

    1) You want to remove that link right now. Naming and shaming is not tolerated here.
    2) With a few months of experience and a level 70 character you're not excatly "new" anymore, at least not in my book - I'll probably sound like a jerk too, but I expect someone at level 70 to know how to play
    3) Not excatly normal - but we also dont know what happend here. Right now I dont want to judge over wether or not he was actually rude or just not suger coating that your dps was bad and you need to look into your class more.
    4) Parsing and shaming someone for that is a reportable offense -> thats your way to go there.

Please realise though that level 70 with several months of playing means you're not new anymore and actually expected to perform well on your basic class rotations and such. If you're unsure: Please look up guides, find BLMs to ask for advice, play around with your class on a dummy or something - but stop using that excuse in a level 70 dungeon.

This is a pretty shallow way of thinking about it that neither accounts for the actual time /played nor what experience the person in question may or may not have and doesn't seem terribly useful. Skilled players are forged in the fires of serious endgame, where there is both performance feedback and incentive to improve. Everything up to that point, while not entirely irrelevant, counts for very little.

    1. Fine, removed.
    2. A few months of leveling to get to 60, and then been doing SB since release to level over the last week only hitting 70 this morning. So that's hardly months with the new rotation.
    3. Out of the blue before the last boss he singled me out saying my dps was dreadful and I should learn to play my class.
    4. Have done.

By several months I mean approx 2.5 months since I started playing. All I've been doing since then is leveling to get up to speed, but apprently from your perspective that means I should know the new rotations for max dps on every new encounter instantly. Got you.

I was given tips while leveling to 60, and worked on what I was given and was reading up on the correct rotations to use and applying them. Those were always given in a constructive and helpful way.
Those roations seem to have gone out the window with SB so I'm having to relearn as I've been leveling and trying to find time to read up on the new rotations between work and leveling.

No, thats not what I meant - I'm aware I'm sounding a bit harsh, but my issue here is: I dont know what you considered "rude" already and wether ot not "dreadful" was actually an accurate description of your dps. Ofc you dont have to be perfect or anything but during my time with this game I've met people on level 60, in level 60 dungeons not being aware of the very basicis of their classes - BLMs not knowing how to handle their fire/ice; bards not using their dots; melees not caring about their positionals; healers spamming one healing-spell; tanks not using their aggro-skills... the list goes on and often the excuse you hear is "I'm new" - and I dont know wether or not thats the case here.
I also dont know wether or not that tank simply told you in a not super-polite way that your dps wasnt great (and wether or not that was actually the case - because thats the problem here: as long as you were doing fine, he was even more in the wrong than just for parsing... but if your numbers actually are/were bad I can understand his frustration to a degree)

If you're actually doing fine (may I suggest a SSS-visit, so you can check for yourself? I know they're like EX-primal-stuff and you dont have to beat it, but how far you get should give you an idea on how well you're doing overall), my advice would be to shrug it off - very few people will actually say something after all...

I'll admit I'm really a bit torn here - on the hand we all should try to be polite and helpful as best as we can (and I'm sorry if I came of rude, I'll admit I wasnt to thrilled by your naming-shaming-thing, that brushed me off in a pretty negative way) but on the other hand I'm also of the believe that its everyones duty to look into their job and how to play it themself and not expect to be teached by random strangers in a highlevel dungeon.
If something like that happens again though, I'd suggest to reply with "well, tell me what to do better then"

Telling someone to look up a guide for a level 70 rotation is quite excessive and 100% unreasonable. please realise your expectations are ridiculous.
Its a dungeon. Not a savage raid. read the tooltips will suffice.

How is that unreasonable. Why play a game if you don't want to learn to play the game? The way they make the DPS rotations is easier to understand than reading the tooltips, it's just pictures and arrows so that even the most stupid illiterate people can understand how to play. The only reason there is to not look up a rotation or learn to play, is just that you are either lazy or don't care, so don't expect people to cater to you.

Holy ass, do people even play video games anymore? Am I missing something here?

Next thing you know it a new 2D Mario will come out, and people will say it is unreasonable that Nintendo expects me to both move to the right and jump at the same time as I should not be required to learn to time my jumps.

If you feel this way please do us all a favor and just stop playing video games.
