I think payment methods are still tied to the region of your service account and you may need to keep paying with your current method even while you are in Japan. So that may mean leaving leaving enough money to cover the monthly costs while you are here, or making sure someone can cover it for you.

Yup they definitely are. I still pay via my UK bank account. This can sometimes lead to another set of issues with getting errors when trying to change things on mogstation such as number of retainers or subscription schedule when you are accessing from another country (even using VPN I kept getting errors and got locked out of my account for a time).
