Ok, so I looked at the worlds statuses, and it looks like I probably would not be able to transfer to Tonberry or make a character there...

A couple of links to help with learning about the Japanese community a little.

Is good for looking up onomatopoeia slang that might come up in conversations while you're there.
That's what I thought =(
but hey.. on the bright side.. things are cheaper and housing are available on other servers.
I recommend you look thought here: http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/forums/666-Community and see if you can find some RP FC on the potential servers you would transfer to. THEN make a character on that server and join the RP FC to see if you like it before you transfer.

Inventory UI improvement
Real "Repair All" function
more Teleport favored destinations
Mount Roulette Filter
I live in Japan and play on a NA server and the majority of the time I don't feel the lag is that bad. I usually get a ping of around 130ms compared with the 20 I would get to the JP servers. That said I'm still thinking of transferring, if only to get more Japanese practice considering I spend a lot of time in Eorzea! I'm just hoping Leviathan gets added to the congested server list so I can get a free transfer and a nice cash injection as reimbursement for my house![]()
Hi. Just something to be careful about in order to continue playing after your move.
I think payment methods are still tied to the region of your service account and you may need to keep paying with your current method even while you are in Japan. So that may mean leaving leaving enough money to cover the monthly costs while you are here, or making sure someone can cover it for you.
Yup they definitely are. I still pay via my UK bank account. This can sometimes lead to another set of issues with getting errors when trying to change things on mogstation such as number of retainers or subscription schedule when you are accessing from another country (even using VPN I kept getting errors and got locked out of my account for a time).Hi. I'm originally from the UK and moved to Japan, and now play on Tonberry. I went the route of starting a new account to avoid billing issues.
You do have the option of changing your UI between English and Japanese any time you like.
Theres a large English speaking presence on Tonberry, but you'll be playing mostly with people from AUS/NZ or Singapore if you join an English FC.
Personally I'm in a really friendly JP FC called LunaMoon. They don't speak English but they don't mind foreigners when you're ready to make the jump away from English.
In my opinion, if you're gonna play in Japan, I'd recommend the switch to a JP server. Playing with people in your own time zone makes it a little easier to "get things done", and there really are plenty of English speakers on Tonberry.
Edit: Tonberry is crowded already. You probably can't join anyway

1) You can set your language to whatever. Even with an English copy of the game you can set it to French, Japanese or German if you want. What server you're on makes no difference.
2) Lag between Japan and Balmung isn't that bad. Connection is either "Good" or even sometimes "Excellent"... it really depends on your ISP. If you get Fiber (called "Hikari" or 光 in Japan), then it won't be bad at all to connect to NA. Unless you're trying to do the most progressive hardcore content, you shouldn't notice at all.
3) Yes, you can just click and drag to select text and then Ctrl + C and Ctrl + V into Google.
Tonberry is now classified as congested, so you won't be able to move to Tonberry even if you want to. Personally I do like Tonberry, but knowing Japanese myself, it's a bit annoying to see some of the immature shouts that happen in English.
Masamune still has a decent English population if you want to go there. And since Party finder is cross-server now, it doesn't really matter if as long as you're on the same data center as Tonberry.
I had a friend I was in the navy with get restationed in Japan and lived off base. He had prblems with payment on the mogstation becasue it saw a JP IP address but an American credit card. I am not sure what his work around was. You also cant use promotional codes exclusive to Japan (7/11 event) or the JP expacs with a NA SE account. Other than that enjoy your time Here.
Here's a thread with some useful Japanese terms that are more specific to FF14. It's a bit old and could probably use some updating for newer game terms, but still has some nice basics.
