Theres no way to make content last, if you take the XI approach now people are just going to get sick of it and move on to a newer MMO where people feel rewarded and not by chasing 1-5% drop rates/Artifical roadblocks. The ONLY reason why people are hesitant to do this with XI is because people have 9 years already invested into their characters and have friends they play with so people put up with it there.

This is the age of the casual in the MMOworld, like it or not, the problem is no MMO puts out enough content keep even the casuals at bay. What has happened in current MMO's is that its never enough content, your hardcore will blow through new content in a matter of hours while the casual will do it in a few weeks and when its all said and done theres still a 2.5-3month wait for new things to do which leads to people getting bored.

It has become an unfixable problem with the genre unless a company starts putting out content updates at an unrealistic pace to literally drown the playerbase. In the past WoW used what they called "Gating" which means you release a raid of like 10 bosses but only 4 are available at first then each week that passes a new boss unlocks to "make content last" but it was so unpopular it caused a shitstorm and they stopped doing it.
