I came from WoW as well, and played on some of the highest pop servers (Moon Guard and Stormrage). It was never as bad as it is on Balmung in FFXIV right now.
Kil'Jaeden during Cataclysm had a five hour wait time with a queue of 3000+. I used to have screenshots to remind myself how bad it could be. I'm also lucky that I don't rp so I actually have more options of places to go.
SE plllleeease actually put in some effort to fix the problem other than expecting long time players and residents of high pop servers to just up and move away from their friends and efforts.
I came to balmung since the start of ARR. All my friends are here. My COMMUNITY is here. I'd never leave, because i don't want to leave what i love behind.
But getting randomly DC'd and then having to wait 4 friggin' hours is unacceptable! Heavensward wasn't even close to being this bad!
Blamung probably grew in population since HWSE plllleeease actually put in some effort to fix the problem other than expecting long time players and residents of high pop servers to just up and move away from their friends and efforts.

I'm sorry but I have to disagree. If you have to be gone longer than 30 minutes, then you should have to wait in a queue to get back in like everyone else. But thats okay because of the auto afk timer would actually kick everyone no matter what they were doing the there wouldn't be near as long of a queue. So basically you could come back from eating dinner and get back on in 10 minutes. See how that works? Wow what a concept.Only reason I could say it ok to avoid the afk time out if like if have to get eat dinner or something and the the queue to log back in would be longer then what you would be gone. So if you going to be gone for an hour and the login queue is 4 hours I could see that. But that ones I do find selfish are the one that leave their system on 24/7 while they sleeping or at work yea those guys are A##holes.
The easiest solution at the current moment to address login queue times would be to adjust the AFK kick timer. Right now it doesn't kick anyone currently accessing any kind of menu in the game. If they had it where the system looked at time between input commands, regardless of what a character is currently engaged in, things would move a lot faster. If a player isn't inputting any commands for an extended period of time (pressing any button on your keyboard/controller), then the system should kick them off and into the queue. In this scenario, players would either have to remain actively playing in order to keep in the game. You won't have afk people taking up spots on the server better used for players actually looking at putting in some time in the game. The queues would probably be just as big, but they would move a lot faster than they currently do.
I mean, let's be honest here - where Balmung is concerned a lot of the blame is on Balmung itself. I told people to be a bit more careful about trying to convince anyone and everybody to transfer over because this sort of situation was pretty easy to see from far away. The server was always very busy, it's just become ridiculously busy as the game has grown in popularity. Whenever I brought it up, though, I found myself insulted and ridiculed. Mostly because a lot of people on Balmung are selfish and act as though more and more people can be brought into the server without any negative consequences.
It's at least understandable when people do so because they want their friends to play there too but it's less justifiable when it's a case of people urging randoms to show up just because Balmung is a 'busy' server. Thankfully for role-play there's other options available in the form of Mateus and Omega...as well as smaller, more tight knit communities elsewhere.
