    GoT? Don't know don't care.

    Now I could start listing of the clever references to Legend of Heroes;
    - Cold steel.
    - Liberation front.
    - Prince gathers an army from the highlands, to take back a kingdom.
    - Dividing efforts between west and east against the same foe.

I used to like the Localization but it really is getting a bit bland. Just looking at Dusk Vigil, the whole dungeon is a GoT reference.

But it's not just GoT references, the problem is that there are just too many pop culture references going around and it's getting really lame and I cringe more than I love since they feel so...forced. I work in gaming, we do localization, I know how it goes and how exciting it is for the loca team to build in these things but it's just getting way too much. You can't even turn around without getting a reference smashed in your face.

Legend of Heroes series does have REALLY good world building, but the series is so niche that I'd chalk all of those up to mere coincidence rather than being intentional references.

I'm getting more of a Yoshitsune vibe, especially adding on the rumor of him fleeing Japan while injured, traveling to Mongolia, and becoming Ghengis Khan.

I do find some fate names really funny and I am okay if they stick some kind of references there but at the same time I want to play a character in Eorzea that has its own originality and not a copy of other games. In the end I kinda have mixed feelings about their use of these references and reuse of other Final Fantasy stuff. As someone that only played FF13 and this game, most of the references to other Final Fantasy games are going over my head and I only know about it because people post these stuff.

Yet every time I see a monster from FF13 I am not really that happy because I know that they are only reused models from that game and then I see all the posts about monsters and other parts of the game that are reused things from older Final Fantasy games and other games/books/movies references that I kinda question what would remain of the game if you strip all that away? Where does it truly stand on its own? I am fine with references or using existing primals in a different way but I still wish that they would create more completely original stuff.

And about translation and stuff: They did change Haurchefants character in other versions and it seems that Yoshida did not know about these changes (someone asked him about the different translations) and with Heavensward they made him more like is Japanese original thus making some people suspicious of him because he was behaving a bit different. I am fine if they change some bits but I am not fine with changing characters just because some people could dislike them or be uncomfortable. Also I would find it nice if they cut down on the 4th wall breaking. Alisea seems to be quite the 4th wall breaker in SB with some of her sentences and I am kinda glad that the German version is not that bad because at the end of the day I would want to play as the character of a world and not be reminded that no we are not truly a character of that world. It just breaks immersion.

I swear I'm going to make a thread that lists all of the references that my husband, myself and friends have recognized over the years that probably fly over the heads of most people. Most F.A.T.E.s and quest titles are references. Achievements, too. This is not even counting puns/wordplay (like Special Tarasque Force).
    • Sharknado - FATE -B rated movie of the same name; has a cult following.
    • By the Horns - FATE - Chocobo named "Bull Chocobo"- in reference to the phrase, "to catch a bull by the horns."
    • The Migas Touch - FATE - in reference to The Midas Touch
    • You're Tearing Me Apart - achievement - in reference to a line spoken in the B rated movie, The Room.
    • The Lady in Red - Stormblood MSQ - song reference to Lady in Red; the achievement is "Cheek to Cheek" upon completing this quest, which is a lyric from the song (in case you doubted the reference).

There's just soooooooooooo many references. I know there's a list floating around of just references made in FFXIV toward other FF titles.

FATE name references are pretty good. They're mildly annoying since I play on a non-English server and the jokes all render the names meaningless to the rest of the players I'm talking to (it's confusing!) but as standalone content, yeah, gives my group something to chat about when we're waiting in a zone. And they don't break my immersion at all because I don't care what FATEs are called. It's only when it's inserted into the actual story (repeatedly) that I start to get distracted.

I also don't mind the FF monsters reappearing. The team does a good job of introducing their own unique monsters/races alongside the traditional ones, IMO.

Saw this and felt like replying:

Though he never refers to my character as partner, having done all the DRG questline he did make several references to the fact we're both cold hard badasses working together under the name of the Azure Dragoon. So while he never said "We're partners, partner." He did make intonations that gave me that same sense of feeling.

Off the top of my head:

    The Big Bagoly Theory
    The Big Banquet Theory
The Secret Life of Plants (Secret Life of Pets maybe?)

For a lot of these references.. only a few are actually specific to certain series; A lot of other things, the phrases just found their way into those series and the series became popular.
Things like "(e.g. 'A Qiqirn Always Pays His Debts')", that phrase isn't Game of Thrones... the "<Insert> Always pay their debts" is something that has been in popular culture for ages, the same goes for a lot of these references, except specific names; and even then, some names (of people) are bound to be reproduced by other media because there are so many variations that can be used and still be pronounceable.
