Seriously though, DDoS attacks or not, I find it astonishing that despite having (a) more experience, (b) supposedly better servers, and (c) one less console to worry about development for, SE managed to make Stormblood a far rockier launch than Heavensward. What gives?

All the experience in the world isn't going to help you when unexpected issues arise during the EA/launch of a big mmo expansion. There is only so much they can prepare for with whatever budget they have. Expansion launches are rarely smooth for mmos, see warlords of draenor launch. There are too many variables people don't know about or have any knowledge of so the easiest thing for people to do is rage at SE out of sheer ignorance. It's kind of pathetic honestly.
