Dear Gilgamesh Party via Sirensong Sea... (aka "I don't know my Job/Role!")

To the party who so serendipitously kicked me due to:

    1) Me standing in the bad.
    2) Some members standing in the bad cause I was standing in the bad.
    3) Telling me to not stand in the bad.

Let me explain WHY >I< stand in the bad:

    1) I am a Tank. I can take harder hits and status ailments that other party members can't. I do so when I think the Healer can keep up with me and the group.

    2) Due to large pulls and the way enemies swarm, I cannot help it if "the bad" sometimes hits you as well, since I'm just trying to do my job and keep the enemies in place so that DPS jobs who have positionals can continue to dole out the damage.

    3) I don't like to flaunt my mentor status, but I usually keep it up to try and drive the stigma that comes with it away. I try to help out when I can and I like to think that my ~5700 hours of playtime amounts to some decent level of knowledge, despite the fact that I don't raid.

... I still get nervous at the thought...

So can it not be understood that when someone tells me they can give me tips, yet the reason for a wipe was that the DPS was being split and I was already having a tough enough time already, what with the DPS output being high and ripping hate off me sometimes...

When ANYONE who is doing their job right... yet the DPS split apart and make it hard to AoE and keep hate up... and then deride my ability to do my job...

... Anyone would get upset at that.

I understand that in my anger to try and explain why I would stand in the bad, it looked like I was attacking the DPS, but as I stated above, I was just trying to stabalize the trash mobs so those DPS classes who have positionals can continue to do so.

So yes, I was doing my job.

I apologize for this rant thread, but I had to get this off my chest.

dodging attacks is seen as important for tanks, as well. don't worry about the dps positionals in that regard, they need to dodge too.

Sure don't needlessly spin the mob, but be sure to respond to the incoming attacks, that includes "the bad".

Even though I understand that you're upset, two things here:

Dodge for the love of god! Each hit you take that could have been avoided is a healing speel your healer is casting instead of a damage spell or wasted mana. If you dont want to dodge: A lot of enemies can actually be stunned, your dps benefits from that aswell because they wont get hit either. Other than that... try to make an effort and move OUT of AoEs (unless you know your healer is cool with you standing in them). Being a tank means you can take more, yes - but that more shouldnt be more than absolutly needed.

Secondly: I know its old fashioned but if you struggle to hold hate: Mark your mobs, tell the dps to stick to that order, stick to that order yourself and let anyone who doesnt have the mob they wanted to tank (just make sure that you're still above healer-aggro).

I personally expect the tank to get hit, and yes... even get caught in AoEs... it happens, you are the guy that takes the damage.

While I know a lot of tanks try to mitigate this as much as possible, its not always possible.

That's what the healer is there for... because you expect the tank to get caught in AoEs or the bad sometimes. They need to keep those AoEs pointed away from the rest of us.

The only problem I would have... would be the lack of agro control... those mobs need to stay on you... not everyone else... you need to gather them up and get your house in order. Failing to do that, means failing to be a good tank.

From the bit of information you provided, nothing about the kick seems "serendipitous" at all.

Getting hit by "bad" on occasion is inevitable, but you shouldn't purposefully get hit by things because you "think the Healer can keep up with me and the group."

Another non-issue is the separation of DPS. We are past the days of numbering mobs, and dungeons are just massive AoE-spamming clusterfucks. If that means you have to flash and spam your AoE rotation / AoE abilities ad nauseam to maintain hate, so be it.

We are always in an environment where tanks are in high demand, but the need for tanks is even more pressing with the launch of Stormblood. If a group thought your performance was such that they were willing to wait indefinitely for a replacement tank in the current climate, you may want to reanalyze your playstyle in group settings.

    2. As long as your keeping flanks and rear open and in "safish" places for your dps to attack, you have done your part position-wise as tank.
Dodging AOEs is on them after that.

    3. "mentor status..... despite the fact that I don't raid" - Accept that you may still have things to learn as a tank.

Your a tank, you make decisions and the party deals with the consequences. Sometimes it goes to hell and its your fault, sometimes its not your fault and you will still get blamed. You got kicked because you let your ego control your behavior sounds like. Next time, take the friendly aggro in stride. You are the tank after all.

    Dear Tanks,

As a healer main Id like to address this false belief that you can just stand in "The Bad" because you can take hits. You can't.

To those saying that healers should also be DPSing. Stop. Most of our damage was taken away, and the way the MP cost on our heals was increased preserving all the mana we can for those spicy tank busters and spike healing roomwides we cant afford to do much else. DPS need to DPS harder.

    Sincerely,

    All healers

As a white mage, that hasn't been my experience at all. With Assize on a shorter cooldown (and made far better due to Cleric Stance's removal) as well as Thin Air, I can now DPS with 100% uptime, while healing, and never even come close to running out of MP. Heck, I can use Thin Air for Holy Spam and not affect my MP at all. It goes up, even!

Here and I thought White Mage was the healer job that was nerfed. Well, I guess other people than me will see as far as raiding, but in dungeons, I feel like a god now.

That is the healers main role. Don't count on healer damage.
