Square Enix, please give us an option to fix the default text size for...

    NPC Dialogue Box
    Main Menu
    Virtual Mouse Mode Indicator
    Messages such as "Invalid Target"

These all shrank considerably as of 4.0 and while I mainly only care about the dialogue box and how annoying it is to have to resize it every single time I log in the others cannot be resized at all to my knowledge. Please give us the option to set the default size permanently so we don't have to fix it constantly and/or be able to fix the rest period.

Those are tied to HUD size in system configuration which unfortunately are set to either 100% or 150%. An individual size that can be managed via HUD Layout menu would be greatly appreciated but at time of writing that is not available. I agree that 100% is just a bit too small for the distance I sit away from my TV and 150% is just unacceptable. A 110% or even 120% option would make it work for me.

    Go in to system settings
Set your HUD size to 150%
Then set your default size to 90%
Click to apply it to all.

That pretty much returns it to the way the HUD layout was before and will solve the issue as well as it can be at the moment.

You can change NPC dialogue text size, but it don't save it

Here's the latest I've heard on the fix they're working on:

Please allow me to give an update in regard to this matter.

We're currently creating two programs to fix the PlayStation®4 UI display scaling.
    1. One will adjust certain system-type UI displays* to be the same size as they were during the Patch 3.x series.
    2. Increase the font size limitation on the chat log and chat input from the current size 20 to size 36.
    * This includes UI elements such as the main menu, small NPC popup text, and other text on screen.
We are unable to roll back the display system to the one from the Patch 3.x series. To address this issue, we need to create a new program for the Patch 4.x display system so that can display the elements at the same size as they were during the Patch 3.x series. For this reason, we require more time to address the issue, and we weren't able to address in the hotfixes today. We apologize for that.

The program is pretty much complete, so once we're able to test this with various settings, we'll follow up with the date in which we can release the fix. We ask for your patience a little while longer.

As for the program which will address the issue, we're taking methods so that it won't affect the settings everyone has currently set. Please rest assured that you can keep your current settings if you feel that there isn't any issue with the current UI display.

We'll go over the details once more when we release the adjustment.
In the meantime, you can either go with the 150% HUD Size workaround, or else go into mouse mode to scale up the NPC dialog window each time you login. (Personally, I'm going with just resizing the dialog box each time, since I don't want to have to resize and rearrange everything else.)

Wouldn't it be easier to just allow the changed text size to save, like every other size adjusted HUD element ?

It might return it to the way many people had it before, but I'd done significant rearranging of my HUD, with different elements at different sizes to fit where I wanted them. Any size that's applied to all of them would be wrong for quite a few. That's why I didn't want to mess with that and decided to go with the other option of just adjusting the dialog box (despite having to redo it for each session).

And for anyone who doesn't know how, here's an excessively detailed description of how to change the PS4 dialog box size with a controller:
    1. Go to an NPC and initiate dialog.
    2. Press L1+R3 to turn on "mouse mode".
    3. Use the right analog stick to move the mouse cursor over the dialog box.
    4. Press and hold R2 (keeping it held down until step 10). This should bring up a context menu.
    5. Using the right analog stick, put the mouse cursor over the "Scale Window" option of the context menu (if it isn't there already).
    6. Press L2 to bring up a second menu of available sizes.
    7. Use the right analog stick to move the cursor over the size you want. (140% will put it back where it had been before Stormblood.)
    8. Press L2 to select and change the size.
    9. If you're interested in what the NPC is saying, read it now because the next step will advance the dialog.
    10. Here's where you can finally release R2. The dialog will advance.
    11. Press L1+R3 to turn "mouse mode" back off.
And repeat that each time you login, because it's not saved between sessions.
