Who said anything about counting on it? The point is to not prevent it. If a healer isn't going to DPS anyway, then whatever, but when I heal, I get very annoyed if the tank is taking unnecessary damage and not letting me DPS. So, to recap: if you stand in "the bad" you're going to annoy DPS healers and not annoy other healers. If you avoid the bad, you won't annoy any healers. Therefore, don't stand in the bad. Period.
I dont count on it. However, more time not having to heal the tank means more time for healer dps, healer utility, healer shotcalling in raid. All kinds of good stuff. All things I consider a bonus if your tank can avoid predictable damage. Or are you suggesting tanks should eat every AOE they can get their hands on? - Cuz its the healers main role to deal with that.

My main role isn't to heal a stupid tank that won't dodge very noticeable aoes. I'll say this flat, whenever I get anyone; tank, DPS or even another healer who refuses to dodge mechanics, I will stop healing you. Obviously mistakes happen, but I'm not going to continuously waste my mana because you can't be bothered to move.
For clarity's sake, I am not referring to the OP here whatsoever. This is all generalized.
