Well since nobody seems to have noticed but didn't that background look like the inteiror of a Garlean battleship same exact as the Gration from HW? For all we know he's still on it or stuck and you know who's body was taken "home" after Zurvan? We have no indication Gaius and Varis were friends but definitely no indication they were enemies since they are both conservative in their views but who is his closest friend? Regula. It's highly likey he snatched Regula's body due to their close friendship.

As much as I hold want Gaius to come back for Garlemald as a leader for all intent and purposes he is dead even the lore book said it and he accepted his fate once defeated.

Yeah yeah, I was joking about Elidibus partying in Gaius' body because I think they would need a living host (much as it breaks my heart because Gaius was the best and everyone with a different opinion is wrong).

More just actually wondering who it could really be. I did consider Regula but it doesn't really match up because Elidibus appeared far before Regula was wounded unless Elidibus has been body hopping and, again, I believe they need a living host to possess but we know so little about how that works so that could be wrong (in which case Elidibus is Gaius 4ever)

I'm just trying to think of other prominent Garleans who aren't dead that Varis would be shocked and outraged about Elidibus possessing.

I think it's most likely to be Regula.

I can't really think of any other existing character that would unnerve Varis. This is the same guy who didn't even flinch when suddenly assaulted with cannon fire back when he showed up in Heavensward within the Sea of Clouds. We can't rule out Zenos or Gaius, I suppose, but my gut is telling me that it's more likely to be Regula due to Elidibus stating that the sight might 'bring him comfort'.

Elidibus isn't a standard Ascian so it's possible his powers of illusion and possession work more efficiently.

The point of Gaius beign the host imho is because we know elidubus already did a similar thing with unukalhai, where at the moment of his death he intervened and gave him a choice, We didn't saw Gaius diying as in exhaling the last breath, while we saw Regula diying in front of us and also we saw Solus coffin.
Also there is the problem of Regula story beign in a sidequest chain, which creates some problems in of itself, unless they decide to lock Sb with triad storyline eventually

This needs to be a thing.

As for the ending, the parallels between Eorzea and Garlemald continue...just as Eorzea is becoming more savvy with magitek, the empire is making inroads with magic and the echo. I think this is an intentional play by Elidibus. The war is starting, and if boths sides are on equal position that means not only a bloody war, but It will also mean, by finding which way the wind is blowing on said war, he can succeed with the empire as well as against it.
