I don't hate people, I just feel better when they aren't around C.Bukowski (Hank)
1.20 Patch Notes < Reading: It's the new cool.
Cool story, bro. Did you bother to read it? Because it specifically mentions that protect and shell will overwrite each other but there is nary a shell-giving action in there.1.20 Patch Notes < Reading: It's the new cool.
To the OP, this item will give you shell.
Conjurers also get a trait that adds magic defense into Protect, but the Shell spell itself is gone.

Which can be located... *drum roll*... in the patch notes.
That's not shell. That's an exclusive added effect for Conjurer.
The OP wanted to know where shell is as its mentioned in the patch notes.
See:
Which can be located ... drumroll ... in the patch notes.[dev1206] The effects of Protect and Shell have been made mutually exclusive, and one now overwrites the other.
They mentioned it because we still have a way to get shell, and they were letting us know it wil overwrite protect whether it's boosted by the CNJ trait or not.
So what you're saying is a revised ability list lacking the ability in question isn't enough of an answer? That's not shell. That's an exclusive added effect for Conjurer.

Because I don't see DoWs asking where all their weaponskills and abilities went.
No, because you're answer wasn't only asinine. It was wrong.
Shell still is shell, and players still can have that effect if they desire. The fact that the patch notes directly mention shell but not how to get a shell effect may be confusing to those unaware of Ironwill Ungent.
^This. As a Con you will get a trait that causes Protect to add the attribute of Shell. But it is Con specific so it will not carry over if you use the buff as a Thm and therefore will need the ungent Sephrick chose.
To OP, the patch notes have all the info. Notes can sometimes be unclear. And being so extensive, it's likely to miss details here and there. I myself was unsure about shell. We have a great and helpful community here. Good luck!
