I been working hard at trying to raise my craft ranks in general and have found the tools and effects have started to lose their great first impressions. It was really amazing how much detail and animation was worked into the crafting process in FF XIV at first but it might be time to start adding some new tool types to add a little variety. My ideas could include something like...
Cooking:
Juicer- Favors Juices/Beverages/Dairy Products; Old fashion looking juicer, not a blender. Animation would be glowing ball in hand similar to goldsmith stone wheel animations but squishing the ball against the juicer. May look funny with other foods but right now making juices with a fry pan or knife is no different.
Armorer:
Wire Brush- Favors Sheets/Plates; Simple hand wire brush applied to the glowing ball to polish sheets and plates nicely.
Weaver:
Sewing Machine- Favors Fabrics/Scraps (Cloths/Fent); Glowing ball at the base of the needle with some sort of cloth being pushed through or sewing machine controlling for the animation.
Tanner:
Leather Shears- Favors Straps/Scraps (Spetches); Scissor like tool with the glowing ball clamped to the table with various cutting animation.
Goldsmith:
Mandrel- Favors Rings/Bracelets; Wood or metal mandrel on a table with the glowing ball on top. Some sort of wrapping animation with maybe a clamping tool or pliers to do so with. My first choice really was a laser cutter but this would feel too out of place and maybe favor of cutting gemstones would be too much like the grinding wheels.
Blacksmith:
Blowtorch- Favors Ingots; Glowing ball on a flat counter with the blowtorch being applied to it for various durations of time. Again my first idea was some sort of mini furnace with a insert glowing ball on a stick animation that would favor ingots/nuggets. But going with the portable idea for crafting, a blowtorch seemed more reasonable. A new addition for equipment to match this might be some sort of wielding mask headgear. A clunky full metal visor to protect your eyes from sparks and explosions, could simply look great with the appropriate crafting classes. Please don't make it ugly like those chef aprons which had potential for making the cooking class the sexiest looking class. Silly undershirts...
Carpenter:
Woodcarving Knife- Favors Grips/Shafts/Handles/Decorations; Small carving knife applied to a glowing ball. Nothing fancy here I could think of really.
Alchemist:
Beaker- Favors Potions/Toxin/Remedy/Oil; Glass beaker with glowing ball inside adding things to make smoke even maybe. This was another craft with potentially many tool choices but staying simple a plain beaker on a counter with maybe some test tubes around it would look okay.
I should have explained this earlier but how do favors work? Well I was thinking that they could work like skills in that skills used would gain an extra 1 turn of duration when the expected synthesis result was of a favored type. Example: Making apple juice on a juicer and using Tender Touch (favors parts) last a full 4 turns instead of expected 3. (Max 4 still) Nothing game breaking but more then what tools would give now.
As for whether these tools would be primary or secondary tools. My hopes would be that they could be a primary tool unless it would look unreasonable at my waist, such as the sewing machine and mandrel. A blowtorch, shears, carving knife and wire brush wouldn't be hard to design to be visible primary tools but that would be all up to the developers if they decide to add any new tool types ever. It may be a lot of work to put into a game but a new hammer with a different name is a little too predictable now.
