I think at the moment we shouldn't be allowed company gear from other companies because we're pretty much enlisting in the army, which was far from what we were doing in FF11. I also think we should have unique gear between them just because it helps differentiate more between players.
Maybe the "better gear from company X" could be alleviated by balance stats differently. Like if Grid gets a INT+20 Body piece, give Limsa INT+20 Legs and Ul'dah INT+20 shoes. It would also be good to avoid overlapping stats with Materia so that more people will find use in Company gear. Of course, this is assuming Unique/Untradeable gear remains unmeldable.
The other option is to have different sets for DoW, DoM, DoL, and DoH, and give them different balances of stats, so someone wearing their company set would have the exact same stats as someone else wearing their own company's set. The individual pieces would be different but the grand total would be the same.

Yah, it's a real quandry: By making gear distinct / unique between the Grand Companies is having the effect we see now (people being marginalized / left out).
But then as you say, if we had full sets that all gave the same bonuses (just on different parts), so that, say, a full set of LL, Uld'ah and Gridania Gear all gave ~+20 STR, +20 DEX, then the only difference would be visual looks.
And is that what people want? It'd be fair, but I wonder if that would just lead to all the Grand Company Rewards feeling the same, but just looking different.

This is a really tired response, especially on these forums.Non flame crafter here, and I really gotta wonder how you can possibly be whining/complaining about this? It's one piece of gear early in the game's life well before the biggest overhaul of all in 2.0. Go outside and get some perspective on what you're breaking apart over.
It's 80% more craftsmanship and 50% more magic craftsmanship than non Flames members can get. I'm not whining, I simply posted the translation and noted the discrepancy against prior statements.
Yoshida said "choose based on stories, the items won't matter," but they do. It's just a matter of fact.
just a question...has anyone tested how putting your craft stats (Vit Str) ext help your sucsess rates compared to Craftsmanship or MagCraft?
I can't imagine people throwing everything in such a fluff if they didn't. Slotted gear may still be vastly superior to this stuff.

My understand is that for crafts stats (like Vit) affect high quality rates. One for main hand and the other for off hand.

All GC item are only for temporary use, just live with it.
I think it is good during certain time to have this city good for this classes and another city good for another set of classes. Then rotate around later. Why must one be best all the time?

Accept Yoshida said not to pick based on what class the city seemed to support or what items a GC gave because it wouldn't matter in coming patches. Had I known such quality items were coming to Ul'dah I'd have stayed there.
It'd be different if we could switch companies.
What do you want them to do?
Give every item implemented to every company? Seriously the gear isn't that massive of a advantage. The best compromise would be to inflate the seal cost for the items outside your company and they may do just that in the future. It's not something to complain about really.
Next patch could introduce even better stuff for another city, so in the long run you really shouldn't choose your company for the gear because your almost betting to be dissapointed in the end if thats your choice. Gear isn't everything.
