After 4.0 update, FFXIV disables keyboard back lighting when it is the active window

Edit: So, this can be avoided entirely if you don't allow games to control keyboard backlighting in the keyboard config. That said, there doesn't appear to be any way to control how FFXIV affects the backlighting other than turning it off.

    Time: 9:57 PM
    Frequency: Always
    World name: Excalibur
    Character name: Cair Bear

    Steps:

Preliminary Step: This is using Logitech G710+ Keyboard.

    1. Login to FFXIV after updating to Stormblood
    2. Launch FFXIV by clicking the "Play" button.
    3. When FFXIV is the active window, keyboard backlighting will be automatically disabled. If you attempt to change the lighting on the keyboard, it will flicker to the desired setting and then disable afterwards.
    4. If you switch another window to active, the lighting will turn back on, and if you go back to FFXIV, it will disable.

I have encountered the same thing with the G19s. All settings the same in the LGS, but as soon as FF XIV is the primary window, all backlighting is shut off with no ability to turn it on for the game.

There is new software and firmware available that came out this month. After I installed it, it works differently.

When in combat the keys turn red.
The key modifiers change the colors of certain keys.
When you initially take aggro, the keyboard does a strobe effect.
