Are you going to ask for a switch every time the promotions are increased?

The items listed are only up to Sergeant Third Class...by the time, you get to the upper echelons, I'm sure all three companies will have comparable equipment with slight variations. Yes, it seems like some items are alot better than others right now, but I don't think you will be gimped in any way in the long run. So live with the consequences of your decision.

    This is SE's fault how?

I'm glad SE finally introduced a choice in this game that has some lasting effect on your gameplay. Not everything should have a "Redo" button when it's introduced.

    Personally,

I think you should be able to change GCs solely from the point of you cannot experience the entire story with only one character, something SE repeatedly says is most of the reason they do not let you make many characters like every other MMO you pay for (and some you don't).

It's silly to lock people out of what little available content there is. It's also utterly ridiculous the people who don't want to be able to switch Grand Companies, yet want to be able to switch race/gender upon 2.0. How is that logical at all? Realistically, if someone wanted to drop Immortal Flames to join Twin Adder, you'd think Twin Adder would welcome them with open arms. They need all the help they can get, not to mention the work you had put in before for them. Now, how does a Lalafell become a female Roe, or a male Mi'qote or any of the possible combinations that will probably be available to users at 2.0? Does not compute.

IMO, they need to let us switch GC, just charge the max amount of seals for your rank to drop out (thus severing your ties to the GC) and charge a hefty fee in gil (traitor tax) if you ever want to join them again.

    The difference is this:
When we opened our FFXIV game and installed it for the first time we could only choose from the current playable races. So some people who would have rather played as a female Roe or Male Kitty didn't have the option and settled by playing as a less-ideal race/gender in their opinion. And while yes, they would be able to re-roll, that is unfair as well since the choice wasn't available then. This is why many of us support gender/race re-rolling.

Now Company Swaps are different: SE warned everyone they were final...even during the cutscenes you are warned this. The menu asks 'Are you sure.' Also, when SE introduced the new company system, they allowed you to choose any of the companies. They didn't say 'Hey, we're gonna add new game content that wasn't offered when you started playing at release, and might have affected your choice in starting city, but force you to be a member of the Grand Company of your starting Nation.' Instead when they gave us this new content, they gave us a choice.

Those who wish to change race/sex would like the same choice.

    Notes:
I will stay a female lalafell when choices are offered (I like my character as is)
My starting city and Guild Company city are also the same (again I liked my city)

Also, I only personally support race/gender changes to any previously un-offered races/genders. But wouldn't waste time splitting hairs over it if all races/sexes were open for change.

Do you not see how ridiculous that is?

Immutable decisions, race, gender, these things you are born with (barring gender reassignment surgery in the most advanced civilizations) being able to be changed vs. being able to pick a different faction, even though you already were once a recruit, and they are in dire need of soldiers. Sure people can wave the "BUT S-E told us, so it's okay!" flag, but it doesn't mean it makes a lick of sense when you view the situation from a logical point of view.

Look, the OP just wanted to be able to swap companies. SE warned all Guild Company Decisions were Final.

The race thing really belongs in a different thread. But I'll say this. You are arguing that allowing players to change race/gender will hurt emmersion...well so does getting on a headset and hearing a male voice come out of a female character but we all live with it.

    Fairness and opportunity:

Guild Company Choice: After being WARNED several times, players still made a choice they were unhappy about. Also, you did not NEED to choose a company yet. (only thing you wouldn't have completed is Ifrit and a couple of the higher quests and a chocobo). So if people were unsure, they could have simply watched and waited. Now if one day SE adds another City and Guild Company, yes people should be allowed to leave their current company to join the new one. The reason: It wasn't part of the original offer and it would be unfair to lock more veteran players into their original Company choice simply because they started playing back when there were only 3 companies to choose from.

Race/Gender Choice: The new dev team wants to fill in the missing races. There are a small minority of folks who really want to play those missing races. Why would you penalize them for choosing a secondary race/gender simply because they weren't offered their first choice? This isn't about immersion. It's about being fair and allowing those who were dedicated from the beginning or at least pre-gender release to get the same options and offers new players to the game do.

Every single one of us saw the exact same questions when we signed up for our guild company. So our choices were all based on the exact same options and information. For now, the same is true of race/gender. However once they release new races and genders, the information you, me and everyone else currently on these forums had when we created our character was different than what new players would be offered. Therefore, it would loose fairness.

The only reason I answered the OP with how they would need to create storyline etc. to support a GC change is because it's true... and also to support the point that it's not as easy as answering a couple menu options.

And while yes, there is NO way under the sun to explain a female lala turning into a female roe, that's not the point. If SE can figure out a way to keep our character data and allow for gender change, then it should happen. But it won't be something added to a storyline. The best way to handle it is 'old friend died in the great battle of the Umbral Era....hello new friend' and leave it at that. But unlike the GC's which ARE created as content and storyline, races and genders are not true storyline creators, rather our identities.

And no, in the real world, Armies don't accept desserters from other Armies, historically, they usually kill them(or force them to spy)...even in times of great duress.

What will we tell our kids when you came up with an idea that traitors can just pay money and be set free? they should be under military probation after dropping out (won't be able to join any GC for 30 real life days).

The Garleans are invading your city. "Oh, I'm sorry Signore Chard, you can't help us defend Gridania, because you used to do some work for the Immortal Flames. Come back in 30 days, and we can use your help then, if we're not burned to cinders by magitek cannons."

    Imminent threat is imminent.
