    Atonement Healing

With all of the healing DPS meta discussions going on, it got me thinking of Disc Priest in WoW. I think it would be fun if FFXIV added a job that works under a similar mechanic.

For those unaware. atonement healing works like this... The healer has a few weak healing abilities that apply a buff on an ally that lasts for a set period of time (in wow, it lasts 15 seconds, or 10 GCD's). While that ally has that buff, all damage done by the healer is converted some % healing to the person with the buff. This works pretty well when you can apply atonement buffs to a large number of people and then spread out DoTs, resulting in pretty good AoE HoTs. They also have long CD, high damage abilities that work like long CD heals.

It's a very unique playstyle, and I think it would fit well into FFXIV. If the devs are looking for new ideas for a healer that doesn't just take one of the current healers with a new skin, I think this would be a good one.

I'm honestly a bit surprised WHM didn't get something similar to this. With the introduction of confession stacks I was expecting some kind of mechanic where we could stack those on other targets, tag the tank in some way and a percentage of all heals on the tank would filter to everyone with stacks. I wouldn't want them ripping off WoW directly by taking the whole 'dps attached to healing' thing but I think that was the right way to use a stack mechanic.

Ugh no I would not want that on WHM. We're already getting something annoying with Confession, making WHM have WoW's atonement healing would just drive me away from WHM.

I like the fact that WHM is straight forward. There's heal buttons and dps buttons. Someday hopefully we'll get a "party-wide dps buff" button.

I don't want WHM to become complicated or have a hectic playstyle like atonement.

I'd still like to see a TP healer, which heals through using damage skills.... though at this point I'm not sure SE can balance their current healers

Yeah, my preference would be to make a new job with this mechanic. While I love this design, it's a bit hard for everyone to get into. I wouldn't want to ruin other jobs for some people by making such a drastic change.

Has that atonement thing actually been working out for them? The last time I played discipline was really struggling because they had a hard time balancing a healer/dps like disc. That's probably a good part of why SE would be hesitant to do something similar.

Some people dislike it, but some people really like it. As for balance, that's a widespread problem in WoW. They're constantly nerfing/buffing every tank/healer/dps spec, and it's not limited to Disc.

Disc can be very strong, but has a steep learning curve. It's definitely not for everyone, but it's a lot of fun.

I guess that's true, but it's rare for balance to be so skewed like it was. But it may have gotten better with gear. I'm a shadow/holy main at heart but I have like 5 priests so I should really play disc more lol. Maybe if I ever pick WoW up again.

Maybe not a full-out atonement mechanic but a simpler mechanic that converts a percentage of damage done by a single spell into healing would be nice. I'm thinking around the lines of Druids' Dream of Cenarius in WoW:
"Increases Wrath damage by 20% and your Wrath spell causes a nearby ally to be healed for 150% of the damage done."
In a situation where damage taken is not too high, a WHM could heal the tank by throwing stones at the boss.
