There's nothing to suggest that the power of light gives the Warrior of Light any real advantage against other mortals as far as I've been able to tell.
Aside from that one of the main reasons that we SPECIFICALLY are sent against primals is because we are both badass and can't be force into being a thrall to said primals. Other characters can be a match, or even possibly more powerful than us, but without the second part aren't good for primal killing.

I'd have to look again, but I swore there were a few times where a strength difference was suggested but it could just be way I read into those lines. A few times in Heavensward there were lines which suggested our power was beyond reason but it usually was only in the presence of a primal, voidsent, or other external threat that wasn't mortal. Though I can understand there are different ways to read such a line.

The Blessing of Light doesn't work against mortals. The WoL's effectiveness is greatly increased against 'divine' level enemies because of the blessing. However without it s/he is just a very skilled and competent fighter. Plus I suspect Zenos himself has a few power ups. Back when Stormblood was announced Yoshi P said we would learn his motivations and how to fight him. That suggest walking up and just punching him in the face might not be particularly effective.

If you remember the Ultima fight, our attacks did almost nothing before the Blessing of Light kicked in, at which point we started ripping the machine apart. Likewise, we survived its ultimate because of the blessing. Even when we fought Ravana and Ifrit we had a Crystal of Light active. The Blessing of Light is our sword and shield against primals and the like but its not really much vs. mortals. Against mortals we have to rely on our base strength which, while formidable, isn't unbeatable.

I don't mind the theory that our character has a tougher time with mortal enemies but we shouldn't be getting completely trounced by a single Legatus at this point, which the trailer seemed to imply. A stalemate or Zenos having a slight edge due to some unknown power we weren't prepared for, sure (which might be what happens considering the glow on his sword). I dislike power fantasies as much as the next person but going from hero to zero is just as undesirable without justification.

The Legatus are supposed to be the best of the best Garlean wise, so this one being an equal to us shouldn't be that much of a stretch. If anything if we just beat his butt every time not only would that totally kill suspense but would just have me asking why we don't just go ahead and invade Garlemald on our own if literally nothing they throw at us is ever a challenge?

Looking at the Wolf People they seem to be wearing outfits that are at least close to imperial uniforms. My money's on a subjigated beast tribe from Ilsabard somewhere. It's standard practice for the empire to station conscripts outside their homeland after all.

Alternatively they're wearing masks and it's the sole character in the entire game who's associated with wolves, Gaius Van Baelsar, the Black Wolf, back from the dead. (it's not, that'd be silly). Gaius also used a sword. Compelling evidence indeed.

Wolf person-->Gaius is the Black Wolf-->Never found the body-->Gaius is actually alive-->Lahabrea also comes back because I will never let this die.

(The only bad part is their distinctly "Doman" weaponry)

I'm really curious about how that sparring match cutscene from the CGI trailer is going to work ingame. Fingers crossed we'll get different scenes based on your choice of job instead of having to pretend you're a monk.
